Pitch

The goal is to filter polluted air from factories& roadways. Plants would be in enclosures filtering air (see photo).

Description

Guidance on collaborative pilot

This is a pilot test of a new, collaborative approach for getting work done in the Climate CoLab. It will run during March and April of 2012.

Just like in the 2011 activities, anyone can create a proposal. But there is also a community proposal, where members are encouraged to work together in a collaborative way. Any member can contribute to the community proposal as long as they are logged in.

The community proposal is like a wiki, so the history of edits is tracked, and you can revert to prior versions of the proposal if desired.

Please also use the Comments to express your opinion on whether or not you would like to see this collaborative approach used in the Climate CoLab in 2012.

Feel free to organize the proposal as you see fit. One thought—it's good to have a brief summary of the overall proposal at the top, as an aid to readers.

Proposal Text

Summary

Summary  CO2 is often carelessly dumped into our atmosphere from cars, power plants, factories, etc. If those emissions instead were cleaned using plants before they entered the atmosphere.   For use in this proposal the units that filter the air will be called: “clean air boxes”. The clean air boxes would have dirty air be pushed in via a fan, then would go through on one of many shelfs with plants on them, finally coming out as clean air; as shown in the image. In most cases artificial lighting would be used.   The first  application is expressways that are currently  underground or in a trench, making it a lot easier to contain the air and filter it. If the expressways is currently in a trench it would be covered and a greenway would be placed on top that would have cycle and pedestrian paths.  The second application is in smoggy neborhoods and cities. The clean air boxes would be stratigicly placed near major roadways, because 1) they are a huge producer of smog and, 2) no inmate domain would have to be used to acquire the necessary land. If the clean air boxes were on the street they would have trees or other plantings a top them.   The third application in factories and  power plants. Instead of the smoke coming out of the smokestack, the smoke would be re-routed to another facility that ids a giant clean air box.

Category of the action

Reducing emissions from transportation

What actions do you propose?

Actions   First, The clean air boxes would be placed at chosen locations along the street as would trees. These would be narrow, so not to disrupt pedestrians.   Second, factories would install a clean air box.  Third, underground roadways would replace traditional ventilation with clean air boxes, creating a closed loop.

Who will take these actions?

City governments, factories, power companies, and highway departments would take action. Laws may have to force corporations to take action.

Where will these actions be taken?

Factories, and roadways.

How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business as usual levels?

It entirely depends on how much participation there is; theoretically it could have a negative net footprint.

What are other key benefits?

The clean air boxes could act as a physical barrier invetween pedestrian and roadways, createmore parkspace, and promote alterenative transportaion.

What are the proposal’s costs?

It entirely depends on how much participation there is; theoretically it could have a negative net footprint.

Time line

The timeline will vary according to government participation.
