I want to propose a bio-genetic approach to help nature using available tools.
The plan envisages that we change the genetic make up of certain non-propogating local species of plants so that the plant grows rapidly and reaches its full size within a year. Once the tree reaches its full size it will soak up carbon dioxide and provide shade, it will also act like a sponge for run-on water in countries like India and Pakistan where tree cover has been eroded due to man's rapacity.
One ideal candidate for the gene manipulation would be Ficus religiosa or Ficus benghalensis whose genes can be modified to incorporate genes from Bamboo family (Bambuseae Poaceae) which is one of the fastest growing plants (24 inches per day) . The largest tree with a genetic kink of fastest growing plant can do wonders.
If such a plant engineering is executed we will have trees that are planted during monsoon in India and be ready to provide shade by the summer months.
What actions do you propose?
Who will take these actions?
Once the plant engineering is done, we will have to bring in governements and NGOs and society to implement the tree plantation drive. This will involve bringing in village societies and groups so that the tree plantation can be done on hills which are currently denuded.
Where will these actions be taken?
Research labs at MIT.
How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business as usual levels?
What are other key benefits?
Rapid growth of forest cover.
A carbon dioxide sponge which is a natural solution.
Soil erosion in third world countries can be halted rapidly.
Ground water replenishment will be rapid.
Flash floods can be prevented.
What are the proposal’s costs?
From development and research to quarantining and testing it may take a maximum of 10 years.
