Finalist Evaluation

Judges'' comments

- Ambitious proposal for reforestation program in Kenya and Tanzania. While well-intended, it is not clear whether the proposing group would be able to carry through the actions.

- Planting lots of trees in Tanzania is a good idea - not novel, but a very good thing to do. Given that so many projects like this have foundered in Tanzania, with one of the main reasons being lack of government interest, it is unlikely that this one will succeed. The proposal is all about what could be done, without considering what has happened in the past and how the problems identified could be overcome. Thus the proposal is incomplete, and appealing is the only thing one can say.

- (1) The proposal provides a complete list of well-addressed items. It is focused on Kilimanjaro and three other sites close to the Kenyan border. Proposed idea is a good one and would expand ongoing activities with support from the government. Currently the state is losing many trees and animals that are hit by folks who take the crops, ivory etc. to Asia. (2) I have personal experience in Kilimanjaro from last year. A colleague planted thousands of trees, providing a way to reduce emissions. A big problem was that one of his locations was hit by thieves who stole the products from the trees. He lost many of the trees and the products. This is a danger that is now recognized by the proposal and it now admits that work in Kilimanjaro may take up to 5 years.

The idea is good. But what experience does the foundation have in terms of planting and sustaining trees? Have they learned from the Green Belt Movement? These are basic ideas and the problem is in implementing - it's not clear that this group has the experience to do that.

(1) It is a very complete list of items that are addressed in this presentation. Also has 125 comments. It is focused on Kilimanjaro and three other sites close to the Kenya border. Proposed idea is a good one and would expand ongoing activities with support from the government. Currently the state is losing many trees and animals that are hit by folks who take away the crops and elephant pieces to Asia.

(2) Personal experience in Kilimanjaro last year. Colleague based in the same town has covered thousands of trees that also include ways to reduce emissions. Big problem was that one of his locations was hit by thieves who stole the products from the trees. He lost many of the trees and the products. It is a common element and the proposal would need to set up ways to reduce such effects.
