Thanks for your proposal! Here are a few of my thoughts that might help to build the proposal further; Can you clarify which urban areas, leaders, or organizations need to take action? You begin your proposal with, "newly independent global South" - Can you be more specific about what communities you are focusing on? Can you identify specific policies, actions, or other activities that leaders of these urban areas should be taking? If the action is "they should adopt the UN SDG's rather than follow the Bretton-Woods institutions of the World Bank and the IMF", then I'd like to know your thoughts on how that policy shift can happen. Thanks again for your contribution, good luck!

gchewe - thank you for your well written proposal! Taking a global policy approach to city-level sustainability may indeed be the most comprehensive path to sustainable development, although the scale and number of parties involved could cause slow progress, especially considering that SDG7 depends upon the enactment of SDG10. Could you expand on your timeline to perhaps address these issues? What sort of resources will be necessary to achieve these goals in poor cities and nations which are effected by these proposed SDGs? Its seems that community involvement from within will also be a key component to the success of all Sustainable Development Goals. How do you propose enabling community members to feel ownership over this massive, international undertaking? I tend to agree with shawnhesse that it will be particularly beneficial to your proposal to list example cities and countries which this idea will impact. Does this project propose a pilot city or just use a broad approach and target all urban areas in need of improvement? Thanks for your thoughtfully composed proposal!

Thank you for this thought provoking proposal. Assuming that SDG 7 (and 10) will be adopted by UN, I think you need to make it clearer what additional measures you propose/recommend to augment (or strengthen) SDG 7 that need to be implemented as well. There seems to be a high degree of overlap with SDGs (esp SDGs 7, 8, and 10) in your proposal. Good luck!

Wow! Just a glance through this proposal and it is clear and obvious that the author has done much thoughtful research, and is in command of the subject at hand. I have to support this. There is a central theme of winning consensus that runs through this, and it is absolutely correct. What can any one person accomplish completely alone? If I knew more about the subject I might have more to say, but sometimes it says enough to recognize when somebody has effectively studied the problem, and proposes somehting worth trying, right?

Wait a minute...are you suggesting Agenda 21 as a good thing?? Because that's what it looks like. If you are advocating Agenda 21..please state that in the beginning. Also, I IMPLORE all reading this proposal to google agenda 21. You will find it is a plan to dissolve individual liberty, and curb the human population via eugenics, et . Scary stuff. The UN us no different than the IMF or the World bank. Any separation there is as illusion army as the separation betwixt the republican and democrat parties...

Here's some great words from Henry Kissinger, one of the biggest proponents of Agenda 21... “Today, America would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order. Tomorrow they will be grateful! This is especially true if they were told that there were an outside threat from beyond, whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will plead to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenario, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well-being granted to them by the World Government”. Dr. Henry Kissinger, 1991

The UN/IMF/World Bank/Trilateral Commission/CFR/Bilderberg Group/etc are all the same folks. Read up on some history...not text book history, but real history. History is written by the victors, too bad the victors are usually the ones with the most money, not the ones with the most scruples...

Hi Gchewe, Thanks for your proposal. First of all this is well researched approach based on SDGs. Few thoughts from my side on the proposal. 1. The linkage to SDGs is more at macro level indicators for city development. These indicators eventually when formalized will follow to the cities through their respective government similar to the MDGs. The proposal would be more sharper if you could propose specific action items for cities in emerging markets. The growth of these geographies and aspiration of people in these markets are going through tremendous transition. Why not deal with lets say two specific issues for ONE ASPECT – Transportation. You could propose action items for building infrastructure and projects for people to stop relying on individual mode of transportation and than influencing people to switch to mass/public transportation. How concepts like telecommuting can be linked here. 2. Try to build on similar specific actions and take example of a city/urban area and develop metric and scorecard for Mayor/Municipal commissioner. You can than link climate financing, ODA and other channel of funds to develop these initiatives. 3. If you do that than your costing and timeline for a specific project would be something more reasonable and an initiative which you could have influence to drive otherwise the present form of proposal is more from the actions to be taken at globally and may be till government level. I look towards your thoughts on my comments and will be really happy to provide further comments on the proposal. Wishing you all the luck!

Hi Gchewe, Thank you for your well written and obviously researched proposal. I would echo bishalvhavsar’s suggestion of narrowing your focus on to a single issue/location that makes it possible to drill down from macro level indicators to more localized metrics, as these often lead to more actionable insights. It would be very helpful to understand the details of how you envision this Proposal being implemented at a pilot stage and then how the learning from that pilot experience could be scaled up and spread globally.

Hi, Thank you for your proposal. I have some questions that could help to elaborate the final document. I would like to know what are the specific actions the actors should be take to get each of this goals? Where will these actions be taken? ... you say that it could be at national, regional or local level... but I think that each place has their own problem, so if we really want to get those goals, you need to define what do you want to propose a document? specific actions?... and them you could determine the location. Regards!

Hello, Great topic choice! What stood out to me most was your description of all the interconnected challenges AND opportunities currently facing the global south. I was then shocked by your proposal that $100 billion would need to be invested to begin the necessary restructuring process. Further details on what exactly this funding would go to and how it would be managed is needed. Where will investments come from and how will results be measured? I think that if you offer some sort of financial framework, your argument will be much stronger.

Thank you for the proposal. I share similar suggestions to previous commenters regarding identifying specific policies, actions, or other activities that leaders of these urban areas should be taking. Good luck!

Really a nice idea and liked it. Would be great if you propose some recommendations how to overcome the challenges of local governance structure/ power structure of developing countries. Thank you Khalid

Thank you for your proposal! You have chosen the Sustainable Development Goals as a starting point and as guideline for your proposal. Once you have introduced the SDGs there is no need for you to go through all of that information. Instead, I would recommend you to develop your proposal building up only the urban resilience target you refer to, and be as specific and clear as possible in the answers you give to the general headings that will give structure to the proposal. Please note that the topics of transportation and buildings are covered in other contests, so I invite you to focus on spatial planning, urban governance etc. Best of luck!

Me too, I find your proposition well submitted and plain of references but still lacking of practical example (just few), that could differentiate it from a sequence of theoretical propositions.

"This reads like an academic paper, but I don't think it is specific enough, nor does it give enough thought to how the approach could be implemented. I'm also not sure that implementing the SDG is really innovative. The summary provides an overview of the problem, but not the solution and it is not clear until many pages in that the focus will be on SDG 7. Comments on this proposal suggested ways to cut and focus the message, but it doesn't appear that this advice was heeded. Although if implemented the benefit could be large, the strategy for implementation is lacking in this proposal."
