Front page news: US Fish & Wildlife Service Habitat Restoration Programs Create 3,973 New Jobs, Pump $327.7 Million into Local Economies

Description

Summary

Department of Commerce esp should be releasing reports & providing media bytes that change the message of environmental protection to one of an economic value.  Industry and business sector still drive a significant portion of the public attitude by characterizing environmental regulations as "costs" or a drain on the economy.  This creates an oppositional zeitgeist.  When the public perceives stewardship as a "new economy" or "environmental industry" aside from  its government component, then action to mitigate climate change, along with other environmental services, will become easier to achieve.

Category of the action

Mitigation - What U.S. Federal Agencies can do to mitigate climate change

What actions do you propose?

Perhaps associations need to form  in order to shift environment from a "cause" to a "business."  Just as there is are associations of realtors, and  of homebuilders, perhaps, audubon,  friends of the earth, american rivers etc need to urge their constituencies into also forming and participating in groups like "association of wetland restoration designers"  "assocation of water quality scientists and managers"  "association of clean air technologists"

This should be simultaneous to agencies tabulating and reporting the economic benefits created by good stewardship, and technology forcing regulations.

Who will take these actions?

Needs spokespeople to bring the ideas foward in agencies, and in environmental groups.  I am not sure how that starts beyond here...

Where will these actions be taken?

How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business as usual levels?

at first, none - this proposal is about changing the zeitgeist to create broader public support for climate protection

What are other key benefits?

What are the proposal’s costs?
