Contest title

Connecting Boulder's Climate Action for Greater Impact (working title)

Contest question

How can we connect Boulder's many citizens, organizations, businesses and governing bodies to have major impact on climate change?

Contest prompt

Our challenge to the Boulder, Colorado community and our region, state, nation and world is to bring 1,000 climate action collectively discovered secrets to bear to help our community and other communities like ours not only reduce our carbon footprint to zero, but indeed to bring a huge oxygen footprint to the earth in its regeneration, it's re-wilding!

Knowing that we'll have to engage seven times as many minds as ideas, we will ask for specific social design proposals for bringing us citizens of the world together in generative discourse to bring nuggets of knowledge and wisdom to our city and our world. Many useful models exist such as World Café gatherings, book clubs, movie clubs and other means to bring collective wisdom about.

We are also excited about the potential for film and the exploding availability of personal video to bring many heartfelt stories to the process, allowing in yet undiscovered ways how the wisdom of their stories may also inform generative climate action.

Additional materials

The contest will focus primarily on face-to-face, heart-to-heart interaction of small diverse groups of individuals, organized to bring an air of constructive discontent and creative tension to bear, where participants willingly step out of their comfort zone to discuss, debate, declare, and denote in additive "both/and" conversations.

Prizes will primarily be personal and group satisfaction that comes with purpose being delivered in a way where the collective good arises in ways that otherwise capable individuals are incapable of. The power of collective wisdom where a 'group mind' makes discoveries unavailable to the individual participants is an incredibly rewarding experience, where a collective joy transends the acquisition of any material 'prize'.

It is anticipated that the mechanics of the group will be governed by the constitution and precepts of Holacracy, a distributed authority system – a set of “rules of the game” that bake empowerment into the core of the organization. Unlike conventional top-down or progressive bottom-up approaches, it integrates the benefits of both without relying on parental heroic leaders. Everyone becomes a leader of their roles and a follower of others’, processing tensions with real authority and real responsibility, through dynamic governance and transparent operations.

We also anticipate using the cloud-based social engine companion Glass Frog that helps organization members visualize their ecosystem and ecotones, which are areas of magical growth between biomes.

It is also anticipated that conversation and interaction will be energized by the participation of approachable celebrities such as "Vegan hippy chick biologist race car driver" Leilani Munter, the star of the new documentary Racing Extinction, who is excited to work with us. Leilani wisely extols "If we only speak to those who believe in the same things that we do, who is going to change the minds of those who don't?".
