Pitch

Based on emission reduction commitments (known as INDCs) made by other developed countries prior to the 2015 UN Climate talks

Description

Summary

This seed proposal is based on emission reduction commitments submitted by other developed countries in advance of the UNFCCC's 2015 climate negotiations. It was created by a Climate CoLab Fellow. We invite other CoLab members to link to this proposal or to use it as a starting point for creating new proposals of their own. The governments of these countries have not reviewed or endorsed this proposal.

As part of the climate negotiations conducted each year under the auspices of the United National Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), countries submit Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) that outline pledges for future reductions in their national greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate Interactive, a non-profit that builds tools to help people understand what works to address climate change and related issues, has analyzed what would happen if these INDCs were implemented.

This analysis, called the Climate Scorecard, projects that based on current INDCs, annual emissions from Other Developed Countries will remain relatively flat from 2015 to 2050, at approximately 8 Gitatons (Gt) CO2 equivalent.

Which proposals are included in your plan and how do they fit together?

Explanation of the emissions scenario calculated in the Impact tab

The model run inputs are based on an assumption that Other Developed Countries will rely primarily on advances in low carbon energy technology to address climate change, with no reliance on carbon pricing policy and increases in energy efficiency that are only in line with the historical rate.

The values used to select EMF27 model runs were:
- No carbon price (e.g Business as Usual)
- Increase in energy efficiency at historical average rate
- Full availability of low-carbon energy supplies

These assumptions resulted in emission trajectories in the EMF27 model inline with the one projected in Climate Interactive's analysis for the Other Developed Countries.
