Countries like US and China are taking more energy yearly compared to Denmark, U.K.etc. for a product manufacturing or service extending.

Summary
Energy intensity is measured in kilogram oil equivalent per $ US GDP for any country. Denmark took 0.13 kgoe/$ GDP in year 2003 and India at 0.16 kgoe/$ GDP. At that time US took 0.23 kgoe/ $ US GDP. The data has been taken fromwww.iea.orgwhich in turn they get from World Bank and IMF.
Energy conservation is one of the methods to minimize excess energy spending. Even for 2011 year US took 0.18 kgoe/$ US GDP against U.K and Denmark have the energy intensities at 0.10 kgoe/$ US GDP. The energy taken by US in 2011 is 80% more. Minimize the wastage and energy equivalent will come down from 2191 million ton oil equivalent.

Most of the countries have more energy intensity even in G-20 countries.These account for 70% of world GDP. Except U.K, Germany, Italy and France all other countries are taking more energy. Energy conservation is one of the measures.
