Fossil Fuels and Nuclear use a lot of water. If we used less energy and also developed Renewable Energy like Solar, Wind and Geo-thermal we would not need so much water. =D------------------

Spot on! The conundrum is: we have the technology to create clean drinking water AND energy. Yet the pace clearly is too slow. One important reason: lack of funding/investments. The investments globally necessary are in the trillions of dollars. Even in highly developed countries like the US the EPA estimates $600B are necessary just to repair its water infrastructure. Public coffers are empty and without attracting private capital there is little hope. This is what I try to address in my proposal: A sustainable structure to address energy-water nexus for urban communities In order to attract that kind of capital structures are needed that will allow the public to participate in it. Most importantly, the solution has to be financially self-sustaining. If we can establish and implement a blue print a viable solution is possible.

RESPOND BY JUNE 27, 2016 here: cache.codeforamerica.org/events/national-day-2016/challenge-water-energy-food-nexus

Calling all people interested in the interface between water, energy, and/or food: the U.S. Departments of Energy (DOE) and Agriculture (USDA) need your help!

The interdependencies between water, energy, and food (also known as the Water-Energy-Food Nexus) present unique challenges, including:

*         figuring out how to use recovered resources from wastewater treatment plants as agricultural fertilizer,

*         lessening the water impact of biofuels,

*         designing hydropower plants to produce energy while accounting for fisheries,

*         determining the embedded energy and water in food, and

*         many more!

The DOE and USDA are looking for your ideas, experiences, and expertise.

Whether it’s barriers that affect your daily life, challenges you've overcome, or solutions you wish could be implemented on a larger scale, we want to hear from you about the interconnections between energy-water, food-water, energy-food, or all three!

Through June 27th, you can submit your ideas here as part of the National Day of Civic Hacking. Just 5-minutes of your time today can help us address current and future Water-Energy-Food challenges.

Please feel free to share this link broadly with your networks associated with food, energy, or water issues.
