Judges'' comments
Judge 1:
Excellent proposal in that it couples the power of system thinking to an existing program at MIT. I believe the next step would be to enlist SDM faculty and resources in this enterprise. Combining the SDM/VMS/CoLab enterprises in providing alumni mentors for a globally coordinated effort is an appropriately large-scale response to the severity of the climate risk and the lack of time to respond. The challenge here will be to provide the incentives, both in the short and long terms that are appropriate for each organization to contribute to this effort while still maintaining their core missions. The alumni of the SDM program are ideally positioned to do so. More detail would be very welcome on how funding and administration of this enterprise could be accomplished.
Judge 2:
Any CoLab related venture led by members of the MIT community (faculty, students, alumni and staff) is already eligible for mentoring by the MIT Venture Mentoring Service (VMS). VMS mentors both for profit, and non profit ventures. The services of VMS are only available to members of the MIT community.
Changing the curriculum of a small graduate program that accepts about 50 applicants annually to allow certification of 20 volunteers each year would not have a significant impact on MIT's 130,000 alumni for some time even if this was feasible. The MIT Climate Change plan has other provisions for credentials and degrees that will impact a larger number of students, and Sloan already offers a Sustainability Certificate.
