Clifford Goudey Jan 29, 2016 09:11 Member 2 \| Share via:	Proposal contributor The MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering Winter newsletter has an interesting article titled "Propelling Transportation Forward: Moving Toward a Cleaner, More Efficient Future." In it research related to biofuels, lighter-weight structures, and I.C.E. emission reductions. There is another article about MIT's John Leonard and his work on navigation and mapping for autonomous mobile robots. These efforts provide a useful basis for progress towards the goals of this proposal and it's encouraging to see an academic department recognize the too-long-ignored problem. As Ahmed Ghoniem, director of the Center for Energy and Propulsion Research said in the first article mentioned above, “With COP21, everyone agrees that we are producing lots of CO2 and not enough clean energy. We have our marching orders.” But I do wonder if those orders are clear enough and whether their urgency has been sufficiently telegraphed.

The Defense Logistics Agency awarded a contract to AltAir for 77.6 million gallons of the alternative fuel blend at a cost to DLA of $2.05 per gallon, making it cost competitive with traditional fuel." It still contains traditional petroleum, so the great green fleet is not quite green.

We find the idea compelling. However, it does not directly address the intent of this particular competition. The aim of the contest is to develop ideas about how MIT's alumni community can help to implement the institution's existing Plan for Action on Climate Change. We invite you to keep working on your proposal and perhaps submit to another Climate CoLab competition moving forward. ------------------- I am unclear why course 13 Alumni dealing with the problems in our proposal are not responsive. Based on the eight semifinalists, I sense the best approach is brevity, vagueness, and minimal potential impact.
