Hi, I like this idea using rice bran for biodiesel. But I have a question about the emission part: "given that diesel #2 is known to spew 22.3 pounds of CO2 per gallon, if we substitute 1 gallon of B-100, made from recycled veg. oil for 1 gallon of diesel # 2 we will save 19.6 pounds of CO2 from contributing to the warming of our planet. If we use virgin soybean oil, we’ll only save 17.3 pounds." I was wondering how these numbers are calculated, aka 19.6 pounds and 17.3 pounds of CO2 reduction. Could you kindly give me some reference? Thanks! -Xiaoyu

What we’ve discovered is that using biodiesel in our diesel engines is far and away the most dramatic and efficient way to shrink and accomplish our goal. The US EPA has spent a lot of time studying biodiesel. In fact, no other alternative transportation fuel has been as thoroughly vetted. Here’s what they’ve concluded: Basically, they have tested biodiesel every which way and concluded that it’s emissions are significantly less than dirty diesel. Now, Califonia’s Air Resource Board will also tell you that if you make biodiesel from waste vegetable oil (we refer to it as “recycled”) you will actually reduce your carbon emissions by 90%. Well, given that diesel #2 is known to spew 22.3 pounds of CO2 per gallon, if we substitute 1 gallon of B-100, made from recycled veg. oil, waste grainproduct /RiceBran Biodieselfor 1 gallon of diesel # 2 we will save 19.6 pounds of CO2 from contributing to the warming of our planet. If we use virgin soybean oil, we’ll only save 17.3 pounds. Either way, we hope we’ll agree that biodiesel is good for our planet. And Springboard Biodiesel is proud of the fact that our 700+ BioPro™ biodiesel processors represent over 5MM gallons of annual production capacity, which means that we could potentially be assisting with the extraction or abatement of over 96MM pounds of CO2 annually! Finally, it is important to note that diesel particulate matter is one of the deadliest airborn carcinogenics. Accourding to one source, diesel particulate matter is 10X more carcinogenic than all other airborn pollutants combined! Dear Mahfuja Parven, My name is Bruno Gomes and I am the designated Impact Assessment Fellow for this proposal. You can learn more about me on the Climate CoLab website. My role with the Climate CoLab is to help you to quantify the climate impact of your proposal, or in other words the CO2-equivalent emissions reduction. This will help you answer the contest question: “How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business-as-usual levels?” You can then input your results into the Impact Tab of your proposal. The first step is for me to perform a preliminary screening. Depending on the size and complexity of the proposal, I may work with you in developing a detailed model or allow you to work yourself using our methodology. During this collaboration I will use my technical background as well as modeling tools. If I work with you on a detailed model: Since you are most knowledgeable about your proposal, I may reach out to you periodically to obtain assumptions and data associated with your proposal.
