2015 Climate CoLab Judges

This proposal was previously submitted in last year's competition and we have not identified any improvement or additional details provided by the authors.

Although we do like the component ideas and they do have merit - i.e. autonomous vehicles with the ability to platoon, some type of highway charging system (rail or inductive) - hard nevertheless technically, solar panel covered roadways, and some right of way for the autonomous vehicles (elevated is a high cost option).

Their presented compilation though does not seem to provide any additional benefits from synergies. Lane separation and the fact that autonomous vehicles can already operate fully immersed in normal driving conditions make the issue and significant expense of elevated highways moot.

Elevating the roadway sounds expensive, as does the use of solar panels on the surface. The benefit of elevating the roadway over simply designating a lane of the highway needs to be clarified. It is also unclear why access every 10 miles is suggested, as opposed to just when it is appropriate.

The door-to-door nature of the concept also needs to be clarified. Would these vehicles be owned by individuals? How would they generate power when not on the highway? Would they behave like existing electric vehicles when not on the highway? There are a lot of questions that need to be addressed.
