SUBJECT: Your proposal in the Climate CoLab

Proposal: Super cost and energy efficient propulsion modernizes exiting vehicle for green

Thank you for your contest entry. We appreciate your willingness to share your ideas and also the time and effort you put into developing a proposal and submitting it to the contest.

We, the Judges, have strongly considered your proposal and found that it contained intriguing elements; however, we have chosen to not advance it to the next round of competition.

We encourage you to keep developing your idea. Transfer your proposal to the Proposal Workspace to re-open it, make edits, add collaborators, and even submit it into a future contest. You can do so by logging into your account, opening your proposal, selecting the Admin tab, and clicking “Move proposal”.

We welcome you to stay involved in the Climate CoLab community: support and comment on proposals that have been named Semi-Finalists and finalists, and even volunteer to join one those teams if you have relevant expertise. During the voting period, you can help select the contest’s Popular Choice Winner. The Climate CoLab will be opening more contests in the coming months, and you are welcome to submit your proposals to those contests as well.

2015 Climate CoLab Judges



The functionality of the proposed gearbox is unclear.

This is an interesting idea, but a lot more detail needs to be provided. Particularly there needs to be more detail on what is proposed, beyond what is presented in the timeline. It is unclear what the authors intend to do.

Also, for someone less knowledgable about the topic, the proposal needs to be introduced better. Particularly, what are the drawbacks of this kind of technology? Do you lose acceleration capabilities etc.?

Benefits estimates need to be based on more realistic uptake of the technology.

It is not clear to us how this technology would reduce traffic? In fact, we could see that if it reduced operating costs, a rebound effect could lead to an increase in traffic, and therefore congestion. This needs to be considered.

It is very difficult to judge the mechanical engineering merits of the proposal for improved mechanical transmission gearbox. There are no numbers supporting the efficiency improvements. Even if partially or wholly true, such a system would improve the transmissions of ICE vehicles that are currently perhaps 0~90% efficient as EVs do not usually use gearboxes.
