SUBJECT: Climate CoLab Judging Results
Proposal: Waste Management Social Start-ups Enabled by Online Leader Board
Thank you for participating in the 2015 Climate CoLab Waste Management contest, and for the time you spent in creating and revising your entry.
The Judges have strongly considered your proposal in this second round of evaluation, and have chosen to not advance it as a Finalist for this contest.
We, the Judges and contest Fellows, are truly grateful for your contribution to the Climate CoLab and for your commitment to address climate change.
We encourage you to keep developing your work. Transfer it to the Proposal Workspace to re-open it, make edits, add collaborators, and even submit it into a future contest. You can do so by logging into your account, opening your proposal, selecting the Admin tab, and clicking “Move proposal”.

Judge 1: Still feel as if the economics of this project need to be revisited. Where is the documentation of how you got to the $350k cost?
Judge 2: The gaming approach to waste management is appealing. I admit I am a little confused as the intended outcome: are you attempting to micro-manage waste management? come up with the most efficient waste management scheme to apply more broadly? is this intended to be an operational waste management scheme or simply a gaming exercise? There are some things that large bureaucratic organization do more efficiently at economies of scale, municipal waste management I believe is one. However, I agree that a new view of waste management is required, with waste reduction at the forefront. If your proposal includes implementing waste management in these small areas (1 km), I think significant administrative hurdles exist with waste hauling and disposal. Good luck.

Congratulations! Your proposal, Waste Management Social Start-ups Enabled by Online Leader Board in the Waste Management contest has been selected to advance to the Semi-Finalists round. You will be able to revise your proposal and add new collaborators if you wish, from July 1st, 2015 until July 14, 2015, midnight Eastern Time.
At the revision deadline listed above, your proposal will be locked and considered in final form. The Judges will undergo another round of evaluation to ensure that Semi-Finalist proposals have addressed the feedback given, and select which proposals will continue to the Finalists round. Finalists are eligible for the contest’s Judges Choice award, as well as for public voting to select the contest’s Popular Choice award.

Judge 1: This project has potential but needs a clear statement of impact, incentive, etc. The proposal states a cost, but has no mention of how that cost is (or if it needs to be) recouped in any way. There is also no mention of how students will be evaluated and what their motivation to perform is.
Judge 2: A good and a well thought out project which can have a big impact in society.

Thanks so much for your comments and evaluation. Deeply appreciated. Further to that I have added a section which highlight the impact of the program, incentives and evaluation for the program. In fact, the success of our program relies a lot on the incentive system built in to it for the various stakeholders from multiple perspectives. We realise that the right incentive structure would determine the long term sustainability and viability of the project.
To recap, firstly, LeadLab is played like a game – because above all, youth are interested in fun, interaction and engagement. Secondly, LeadLab is competitive through leader board, multi levelled structure and recognitions, because it motivates youth to perform better.
Thirdly, we do not restrict the freedom and critical thinking of the participants. We leave it to their creativity to figure out the most pressing challenges in their community and to come out with innovative solutions. Fourthly and most importantly, we tell them not to view it merely as a social project, but as a start-up that can give them credibility and valuable experience - whether they decide to pursue entrepreneurial path or a corporate career. This experience helps them to develop vital leadership and professional skills like decision-making, leadership, goal setting, communication, team building, creativity and innovation. And lastly, based on the performance, and the impact these projects have generated, we select best practices and award and certify the better ones.
We have also added the points about how the investments made can be recouped. We shall be relying on the certification process, that involves a fee towards this.
