Finalist Evaluation

Judges'' comments

This is a good proposal if indigenous bamboo is used and only for restoration and not at the expense of local vegetation or overall local ecosystems. In many cases, exotic species like Eucalyptus have destroyed local ecosystems. Also, there is no clear market analysis for the use of the bamboo produce.

Moreover, it is lacking some details in the implementation, so it's not clear whether or not this proposal will have impact. The judges encourage the authors to move it to the workspace and resubmit next year.

Congratulations! Your proposal, Use Bamboo to Control Floods and Save Forests, in the Adaptation contest, has been selected to advance as a Semi-Finalist. Thank you for your work on this very important issue. We're proud of your proposal, and we hope that you are too. Again, congratulations!

Please see below the following comments to enhance your proposal:

This proposal addresses the issue of using bamboo to combat flooding and erosion. While this idea certainly holds potential, the proponents should consider a more specific geographic region of application, ensure that they address possible biodiversity tradeoffs of widespread bamboo planting, and more deeply explore the necessary partners and avenues of implementation.

Bamboo is indeed a wonderful resource. Given the high rate of deforestation in Sierra Leone that the authors cite though (with wood having been used unsustainably by people for livelihoods), why not re-plant indigenous trees (forest restoration) and seek to harvest sustainably? Maybe both forestry and bamboo could be done (monocropping always has pitfalls). I would suggest narrowing down to one specific site.

All the best,

Dear 2016 Climate Colab Judges,

I am so sorry I was not able to make incorporate your suggestions adjustments to this proposal.

If the proposal does not proceed to the Finalist Stage, I will move it to the Workspace and develop it further for next adaptation contest. I found your comments very useful. Thanks for your time.

Regards,

Martin
