Comparative Study/Analysis tailored to location/economy and various aspects and setting up flexible, easy-to-use guide/tool



Goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the electricity sector.

So many resources (data, research, tools) --- how to put together and to make best use of it.

But the way to achieve may/can vary vastly based on various aspects like how viable it is to replace existing technology, how to retain the existing technology and have multiple energy sources and better distribution etc

Using this proposal, trying to see whether an easy-to-use guide/tool can be setup taking into account of job/economy prospects etc.

What actions do you propose?

One of the main reasons for entering this contest is various extreme weather related events that I saw/read in everyday news.

This proposal is using a check sheet approach to identify impact factors and how impact factors can further used to come up with project(s) to reduce GHG emissions.

I like to thank MIT Climate Colab team for giving me opportunity to learn about various climate effects and kind of giving a good feeling that it is possible for anyone to come up with ideas/project proposals even though it may not be the top one.

Also I like to thank Apple Valley, MN – Dakota County, Apple Valley, MN – Galaxie Library, Apple Valley, MN – Calvers. I regularly went to these places to use the open WiFi provided thru their premises. It gave me kind of on the job feeling to come out and use the WiFi on these premises.

Also I like to thank my family for being responsible in their own day to day things which gave me enough time to work on this.


Who will take these actions?

As many initiatives have already been taken or many work-in-progress initiatives, I am just adding general view on who needs to take these actions.

Climate issue is a global one. Everyone needs to work together to identify problem areas and either use existing solution or come up with modified or new one by taking into account of various factors 

Government  -  Policy/Approvals/Necessary infrastructure either for the plant or around the plant/Educating everyone.

Business       -  Individual sectors( for different energy resources) coming up with viable plan/solution based on the above impact check sheet

Check sheet like above can help speed up the process and to come up with required projects/timelines.

What are other key benefits?

     The simple guide/tool approach can bring out inter-dependencies of various sectors like water conservation, protection to natural habitats, transportation, auto industry, buildings & infrastructure etc. that contribute/affect the climate.

    In the sensors/big data/IoT era along with simple guide/tool like the one suggested, it is possible to bring out near accurate inter dependencies in various sectors related to ‘Energy Supply – Electricity Generation’ and correspondingly come up with short term/long term plans to address GHG emissions reduction.

    Many simulations can be done – for example, where enough infrastructure/space available, having multiple renewable energy resources near non-renewable plants and there by operating each resource in a shared manner to reduce amount of time non-renewable plant get used. This reduces GHG emissions and also reduces stress on the natural resources like water, plants, trees, other living beings etc.

What are the proposal’s costs?

Currently I am the only member in the team.

   But still I am going ahead with following suggestions which looks over ambitious even for me.

   Even though ‘Simple Guide’ document doesn’t have exhaustive list of all possible impact factors,  one way to measure is to go by the various factors listed in the ‘Actions’ document.

   Following key points can be used to calculate proposal costs.

    1.    Coming up with project for each of the factor or group of related factors

   2.    A startup with group of experienced professionals/personnel from academia or getting help from leading technology company/companies to brainstorm identified projects and coming up with the decision guide applicable to different locations around the world.

   3.    Using consultancy approach to implement the points listed in the decision guide

   4.    Main idea is to come up with some kind of ‘Energy Supply’ related IoT services. This way company will be able to improve the customer experience based on the feedback from Big Data/IoT services.

Time line

   Time line depends on the complexity of the ‘impact factor’ and various other factors like how to reach out to different technology professionals/personnel from academia for the point no. 2 mentioned under ‘Proposal Costs’.

   Once it is clear that it is possible to set up a startup or part of leading companies (again I know this sounds over ambitious – but felt like mentioning because of complexity of this proposal), I will be able to provide clear time line.
