Pitch

To combat rural community's vulnerability to climate change effects through adoption of solar irrigation and egg incubation technology.

Description

Summary

Every year, Tanzania Agricultural Society organise the farmers and livestock exhibitions in seven zones of Tanzania known as Nanenane. Nanenane exhibitions involve displaying and demonstration of particular skills in agriculture, farmers compete and winners are rewarded. The Exhibitions of Livestock, Agricultural produce, Economic Products, farm Implements, machinery, trade goods and trials of skills in the use of improved technologies and machinery employed in the industries herein aforementioned get organised.

Photovoltaic Solar powered pumps are economical, reliable and easy to sustain. Solar pumps enable the use of water sources ranging from surface water to deep wells. When coupled with the latest technologies in efficient irrigation, solar electricity has the power to dramatically increase agricultural production and family well-being. Diffusion and the installation of effective, affordable and sustainable Photovoltaic solar systems will allow people to nearly double the growing season for vegetables and other crops that have high value during the dry season.

TAREO will attend the Nanenane Exhibition in Mbeya from 30th July to 8th August 2016. TAREO will set up the demonstration equipment which will show how solar energy can be solution for rural poverty. TAREO aims to facilitate the multitude training on the use of Solar Energy for sustainable poverty elimination. Upon adoption of solar energy use, we will be able to reduce farmer’s vulnerability to climate change which result into hunger, energy-related CO2 emissions by introducing renewable energy technology as a substitute for fossil fuel (paraffin and diesel) in rural areas remote from the national electricity grid and improving people’s livelihoods by improving their access to and affordability of modern energy services.

The goal of project is to facilitate diffusion of solar energy in irrigation and chicken production as a means of adaptation to climate change.

Category of the action

Reducing emissions from electric power sector.

What actions do you propose?

  1. Marketing and installation of solar systems for farm irrigation, egg incubation and home lighting. Tanzania is endowed with large fresh water bodies such as lakes, rivers, swamps and underground water which make up 61,500km2. The potential irrigable area estimated to be 29.4 million hectares. Not only that, other millions of Hectares are made irrigable by creating water ponds which hold rain water. Meanwhile, Tanzania's agriculture sector employs 75% of the country's workforce and accounts for 25% of the national Gross Domestic Product. Although agriculture is the mainstay, it is still dependence on rainfall by the majority of the people. Very few as 5% of farmers can irrigate their farms and thus practice agriculture throughout the year. The major impediment to developing irrigation programs has been the lack of an energy source to move water. Much larger volume of water needed for crop irrigation can only be provided by mechanical means. Pumps driven by fuel-burning motors have proven to be unaffordable by most families and unsustainable in terms of maintenance and upkeep. Solar powered pumps are economical, reliabe and easy to maintain. Solar pumps will dramatically increase (double) agricultural production and family well-being.
  2. Environmental awareness and capacity building regarding Sustainable Agriculture practices. TAREO will attend the Nanenane Exhibition at John Mwakangale Stadium in Mbeya City from 30th July to 8th August 2016. TAREO will set up the demonstration equipment which will show how solar energy can be solution for rural poverty while achieving reliable, sustainable energy. TAREO aims to facilitate the multitude training on the use of Solar Energy for sustainable poverty elimination
  3. Launching awareness campaigns for decision makers, the general public and end-users. The Nanenane exhibition will be the starting point for more activities.
  4. Piloting Photovoltaic solar systems at community water-pumping facilities and business-centres. This will align with the solar pumping and lighting campaign.
  5. Demonstrating the viability of solar in irrigation and incubation activities. The regular demonstration will be scheduled in various villages so as to attract market for solar technology.
  6. Assisting renewable energy technology companies in business planning and training of rural based technicians. For smooth diffusion of solar technology in agriculture, TAREO will facilitate trainings to solar dealers and some technicians. Also TAREO will stand between sellers and end-user.
  7. Perform a full socio-economic survey of all villages in Iringa Region(Tanzania) to determine needs and to form a baseline from which to measure objectives. We are focusing to put solar systems in as many villages as possible. We will therefore conduct a study aiming to submerge whole region and thus project objectives.

Who will take these actions?

The African Solar Rise (ASR)www.african-sola-rise.org

African Solar Rise is a non-profit organisation with the intent to bring sustainable and renewable energy to development communities in Africa, particularly in Tanzania. The goal of ASR is to inspire business and economic growth by providing African communities with friendly electricity resources. ASR helps developing nations power a brighter future for their people through innovative uses of solar energy. It supports those who are willing to work on their progress through own effort, but couldn't reach their goals due to the difficult circumstances in the country ASR projects focus on rural and remote areas not served by a utility grid, nor likely to be in the foreseeable future. Working closely with local people and organizations, ASR implements sustainable energy solutions for essential needs including agricultural production, waterpumping and micro-enterprise. African Solar Rise supports Tanzanians in rural areas to build up social enterprises with renewable energies.
