Pitch

The first step towards mitigation of climate change effects is the awerenes of environimentally friendly sources of energy, renewable energy

Description

Summary

In line with Sustainable Development Goals Going green TV series is a going to be a conversation starter on matters renewable energy in Kenya which is directly connected to climate change and global warming . The TV series shall explore the various renewable energy models that people can use in their establishments whether domestic rural or urban or in their businesses, cooperate and industries.

It shall explore new and existing techniques and expound on how green energy can be used to improve lives and save costs as well as encourage people to participate in global energy conservation. Using this series, we shall create awareness amongst people about various green energy technologies, its applications and implications, shed light on energy and relationship to other elements  provide a weekly platform to discuss matters renewable energy for the sector. This TV series addresses matters touching on women, children, youth and humanity in regards to the environment, climate change, renewable energy and water. It is new, fresh and timely

This show is critical in creating awareness on energy-water nexus.  Year in, year out Kenya suffers from food and water shortage. The most common source of water for agricultural and domestic use is the rivers. Most rivers in western Kenya come from MT Elgon.

What is unknown to many is that up river people are cutting down trees for charcoal burning so with time caused deforestation and causing rivers to dry. No one is talking relation between the about cutting down of trees and food and water shortage caused which is happening all over the country. Going Green TV Show Kenya will be featuring other technologies like biomass since the people cutting down trees can produce energy for cooking using biomass from their cattle and do small hydro power plants for their power hence eradicating shortage of water downstream, zerorating carbon emission from charcoal burning.

What actions do you propose?

The media drives conversation on so many issues that is why this idea was born in order to start serious conversation on climate change the environment and what individuals, cooperates, industries and government can do to mitigate effect of climate change.

Awareness is one key element to start this conversation. a weekly tv show that tells people it is bad to cut down trees for charcoal used in cooking and lighting instead give them an option of renewables like improved cook stoves, solar lamps and small hydro power plants because they continue with traditional way they increase carbon emotion at the same time doing harm to the environment.

The government through parliament zero rated all solar products the problems is that the citizens do not know this. The Tv Show will seek to give this kind of information to the viewers hence encouraging them to by Solar solutions like solar water heaters making them move away tradional water heating methods like firewood which is widely used in Kenya. This will preserve the forests and the environment reducing carbon emissions and have an impact on Climate change

Awareness during shooting of the show will be key in illustrating how to install for instance a small biogass plant from cow dung which would normally be waste if it is not planting season. From this the farmers will learn a lot and learn how to set up and generate energy for cooking, purifying water and lighting moving away from kerosene and other traditional methods. Impacting positive on climate change.

The Show has involved Energy regulatory commission from the beginning which is the regulator of the energy industry in Kenya. Through the Commission we are going to feature manufacturers and industrial companies that have adhered to the energy efficiency regulatory frame work so that others that have not can gain the knowhow through the show. For instance water that is used for cooling in the manufacturing process can be used for baths if it is not contaminated by factory staff hence energy efficiency. Also featuring on the show industries and institutions that treat their using available renewable technologies and give it to farmers or reuse it.

Airing of the show is a key part of actions to be taken and the media houses will be vital to ensure maximum viewership. The TV show will be aired on NTV kenya on Sunday 1:30 pm NTV has a viewership of 535,000 per time block, NTV highest day of viewership is on Sunday 7:30am 9:30pm, with an average of 930,000 viewers. Also making available the show to any other interested Media houses

Who will take these actions?

Through the TV Show Government will be made aware of where to put more efforts in legislations both creation and enforcement. For instance raising taxes and levy on timber cutting companies. Penalties on charcoal burners forcing people to think renewables. We will tell stories on the show of how other countries are dealing with industries to reduce carbon emission, saving forests and water catchment areas on legislations creation and enforcement.

As for county Governments there are close to 50 permanent rivers in Kenya. If they can direct their energy budgets towards construction of small hydro power plants(renewable Energy) since they are autonomous and independent of the Central government to give individual electricity to their towns and villages in their jurisdiction and use the same generated power to pump clean water to homes. Through the tv show we will feature counties that are already doing this to show the others how.

Through the TV series government will be made awere of technologies they can use in their installations( Police Camps, army barracks and school to save on energy)

Business will be shown way to save on energy featuring business On the tv show that have gone green. this will apply to other organizations including and not limited to learning institutions. As for the learning institutions we will instigate the need to establish more energy research departments that are driven by addressing climate change. For instance, in our first episode we featured green model used at Strathmore University Kenya which has taken a step of constructing green building on their campus which use water to cool the building and then the water is used for other purposes. No need for Air Conditioning

The show is going to create a buzz around energy its relation to water and climate change. This will get individuals think about environmentally friendly technologies for their homes

Where will these actions be taken?

The Going Green TV Show will be shot and produced Kenya which is a developing Country. Kenya is considered a developing country because it faces numerous challenges in development of its society. The country's ongoing development problems include issues with constant droughts leading to food shortages and a high unemployment rate. That’s why this Project is very critical to this country.

Geographically, Kenya contains of seven regions, including plateaus, valleys, plains, highlands and hinterlands. The Coastal Region, containing a narrow plain and plateau, stretches along the ocean from Tanzania on Kenya's south border to Somalia on its north border. The Lamu Archipelago lies in the northern Coastal Region. The Tana Plains, a dry and somewhat hilly area, lie north of the Coastal Region and abut the Northern Plain-lands Region to the north. The Northern Plain-lands Region, a series of eroded arid planes and the Cahlbi Desert, forms Kenya's northern border along south Sudan and Ethiopia.

The Eastern Plateau sits just west of the Tana Plains and south of the Northern Plain-lands Region. This belt of plains rise from 1,000 to 3,000 feet above sea level east to the Kenyan Highlands. The Great Rift Valley, another geographical region, runs from north to south through the highlands in south-central Kenya. The Western Plateau Region stretches along Uganda on the west border down to Tanzania.

Kenya has a few important waterways, such as the Tana River that originates in the highlands/mountains and runs southeast through the Tana Plains and Coastal Region to the Indian River. Lake Turkana lies in northern Kenya along the Northern Plain-lands Region.

If and when this project achieves maximum impact we will wided the forcu area and look at the wider east African Region since the climate change challenges are more likely the same

How will these actions have a high impact in addressing climate change?

Kenya pledged to cut its carbon emissions 30% below business-as-usual levels by 2030, at the landmark UN climate summit in Paris. But with Implementation of Going Green TV Show Kenya, We will likely cut carbon emissions 50% below business-as-usual by 2020

Kenya is a very small carbon emitter in global rankings, but the effects of climate change are devastating and felt everyday

With the implementation of this proposal an expansion will be experienced on  solar, wind and geothermal power, and bring forest cover up to 20% of the country while reducing reliance on wood fuel.

Kenya estimated it will need $40bn over the next 15 years, some of it in the form of foreign aid, to fully implement its climate mitigation and adaptation plans. But with implementation of Going Green TV Show which will give birth to conversation on both print and radio stations which reach the whole population. Kenya would need just a quarter of that kind of funding.

What are other key benefits?

Health complication from traditional sources of energy will not be experienced

Kenya is known all over the world for the amazing wildlife, Climate Change and environment degradation is threatening the very existence of the latter.  Actions will restore our terrain and the forests which are homes for our wildlife. Attracting more tourists.

Job Creation due to Renewable Energy technologies

Material collected  very beneficial to Education and research institutions

Stable supply of water transforming agricultural yields reducing food shortage in the country

Increased disposable income to household that will choose renewable energies like solar water heating. Money injected into other sector the economy translating into growth of the economy

Kenya’s athletes and marathoners are known all over the world for their running prowess and glory. This is because of the good climatic conditions they train under. With the proposed actions the talents of thousands of Kenya marathoners will not be risk.

What are the proposal’s costs?

The cost of the proposal and project is on production and airing of the tv show

The cost is split into two the production cost( KSH 150,000) and cost of buying airtime(KSH 232,000) . Since the cost of one episode is KSH 383,000. This means to do a 26 episode series the total cost is Ksh 9,958,000.00

Time line

Three episodes are already produced, edited  and ready for airing as soon as we get the funds for full production the project takes off. to maintain relevance. the show will be produced and at the same time it is airing . the show will also take a break after the 13th episode

We intend to start airing starting July.
