Pitch

Using the power of the sun to bring water to those who depend upon electrical grid or fossil fuel power to lift water from deep wells.

Description

Summary

I am proposing a pilot project in Dar es Salaam Tanzania to leverage the power of solar to reduce temporary shortages of well water due to the inability of electrical grid and fossil fuel generators to draw water from deep wells.  Through my PhD research in Dar es Salaam , I have seen situations where power shortages and electricity rationing have coincided with increased use of unsafe and shallow well water and spikes in the incident of cholera in informal urban settlements of the city. Using stand-alone solar will avoid this problem and allow urban residents to pull from safer and cleaner deeper wells.  The World Bank is currently piloting this in rural areas of Tanzania , and I believe that this is a solution that is needed by urban residents as well.

What actions do you propose?

Reduced fossil fuel use will help fight climate change.

Who will take these actions?

I would work with some of the same local government, NGO, and national government actors that I know through my PhD fieldwork.

Where will these actions be taken?

Buguruni Ward, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

How will these actions have a high impact in addressing climate change?

Potential emissions would vary based upon the scale of the pilot project but moving from a rough estimate of 0.6 liters per hour  and 2.68 kg of CO2  would be significant.

What are other key benefits?

Other benefits may include a reduced incidence of cholera and improved health, generally.

What are the proposal’s costs?

The proposal cost would be minimal- largely equipment and maintenance.  The major challenge would be to incentivize a local street-level (mtaa) government or CBO to maintain the equipment.

Time line

8-12 months.
