Thank you for your proposal!

We thought your proposal highlighted a concept that could promote increased participation in diverting recyclable materials from the waste stream. We did question the household incentives to participate. We thought that stakeholders would need to produce more incentives for the project to remain viable. Furthermore, we thought that the public may not be comfortable with the size of containers needed (i.e., at least 30 gallon capacity) to make participation worthwhile for them. There are additional feasibility issues, namely with the public wanting to transport recyclables from their house to a public bin. Overall, we thank you for your participation in this year’s Waste Management contest.

Thank you for your proposal. Here are a few questions/comments that we think will help sharpen the proposal to get to the next level:

1. Will people take the time to scan two codes if they barely take the time to recycle at all?
2. Could you describe how the people could get paid for recycling under this program?
3. Could you have a smart bin that weights the increase in weight along with the scanning- could that eliminate duplications?
4. Why not just have a fixed location and a webcam showing the person recycling rather than a QR code on the dropbox?
5. The name collision with DropBox app analogy to self checkout for grocery stores- try self check-in of recyclables to get paid.

Lastly, there is a need a for a business model to make the proposal more sustainable.

This is a good start. Best of luck for the next stage!

Thanks for your feedback, I have answered the concerns and questions through my revised proposal.

1. Will people take the time to scan two codes if they barely take the time to recycle at all? People will scan the codes because it will give them points or discount coupons which generate savings for them when they buy the product next time from the manufacturer. Manufacturer also be in a better position to give the users discount because the manufacturers in return will get empty packages and conatiners which manufacturers can recylce and produce overall savings to the company this benefit is extended to customers and it will be useful for the environment also.

2. Could you describe how the people could get paid for recycling under this program? There will be an app for smartphones the user can use the app to scan the QR codes of the product and dustbin. The points are added to users account when they scan the QR codes meaning that they have recyCled the product. Once the users reach a threshold of points they can use the same for redeeming the vouchers and discounts.Various merchants can signup with this program like Coca cola which will give points for recycling coke products or may be Unilever who gives points for recycling their products. The dustbin QR codes are changed regularly so that the user doesn't cheat the system.

3. Could you have a smart bin that weights the increase in weight along with the scanning- could that eliminate duplications? Each QR code of the product can be used only once with a dustbin, so once the QR codes are scanned the entry is recorded and no one lese will be able to use the QR codes again which will ensure that no duplicates are entered. So there is no need for weight tracking dustbins because it solves the problem without weight tracking dustbins.

4. Why not just have a fixed location and a webcam showing the person recycling rather than a QR code on the dropbox?Webcam is expensive compared to a QR code for each bin also Webcam alone cannot track the individual users whereas QR codes can track it precisely so that points are added to an individual user everytime they recycle.

5. The name collision with DropBox app analogy to self checkout for grocery stores- try self check-in of recyclables to get paid.

Incentive based self check-in of recyclables, the system doesn't allow me to save my concept with new name now.
