What actions do you propose?

- The creation of a collection land parcel

-Strengthen local farmers capacity for in-situ conservation and community management of PGRFA (Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture)

-Develop and disseminate so-called "no regrets" practices for the efficient use of oasis resources adapted to climate change

-Strengthen the role of women in the oasis community especially in the field of cultures. They are pioneers in vegetable crops and seeds

-Improve the community governance of the oasis ecosystems

-measures of rational water resources management

-training farmers in improved agronomis techniques and resilient practices based on agro-ecology

-implantation of experimental drip irrigation plots

- the establishment of a pilot meteorological station in the oasis

-The implementation of an advocacy, communication and social sensibilization and mobilization  plan

Timeline

In the short term the impact will be the iniation of farmers to adopt the techniques learned and to give them a sample of the prefered practices in the mamagement of their oasis parcels. In the long term, the impact is the acquisition and the establishment of new practices and know-how that would preserve the oasis ecosystems. Over time the farmers will become aware that their oasis is a site for local development and will stop abandoning their lands because water is rare

The proposal will start as soon as funds and staff are made available


About the author(s)

The Association for the Safeguard of the Medina of Gafsa is an NGO established in 1988 and has a long history in carrying out developmental action in the oasis of Gafsa and the Medina of Gafsa. It has run several programs funded by FAO and EU and other funders. As an association it has succeeded to get the oasis of Gafsa recognized as a GIAHS( GLOBALLY IMPROTANT AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE SYSTEMS)

IT HAS ALWAYS WORKED HAND IN HAND WITH THE LOCAL INSTITUTIONS AS WELL AS THE NATIONAL ONE. IT has field capacities and is able to mobilze the local farmers andlocal NGS and Organizations.
