Summary

Is a beautiful social-environmental project with big importance for the sustainability, education and development of the African-descendant and native people from the pacific littoral in Colombia. This proposal is necessary for the community owing to it seeks through the retrieving of PET1 bottles in the municipalities of Subregion Sanquianga, contribute to the fight against global warming along with the students of the municipalities, making emphasis on the sensitization through the existing relation between our way of live, climatic change and the adequate management of recoverable resources.

The Green littoral proposal  is innovative and revolutionary for the municipalities Subregion Sanquianga, since it aims to create conscience on the educators and students about the importance of classifying wastes in their source to avoid ton thousands of recoverable virgin material end up irresponsibly in Cordoba’s wastes deposit.The Green Littoral seeks to consolidate itself as a revolutionary sustainable development project in all institutions of the littoral pacific in Colombia, for all the high impact programs aimed to the community, as well as the sea and the planet, Through making conscience, impart education and permanence, along with development and innovation, the goal of making front to the climate change will be reached. This proposal can be taken as an example by other cities and towns all over Colombia and around the world to start similar initiatives for the environmental and working conditions of their most vulnerable communities; although there are not environmental projects that seek stopping climate change in the municipalities, this project shall be the first with a sociacharacter of sustainability that actually aims fostering the community to retrieve materials that contaminate the atmosphere and ignite climate change, through pedagogical awareness, incentives, vanguard and innovation.

- Create a retrieving culture, reduction and recycling for the educative community of the pacific littoral in Colombia.

- The trash is retrievable and can be reused for different proposes.

- Recover contaminated beaches harmed by man.

- Stop all contamination to the sea.

- Increased remittances from educated families with Ecobonus and GrennPoints.


Who will take these actions?

The Green Littoral Proposal being an initiative with a Socio-environmental character of sustainability and development counts with the support of different public and private entities of the Colombian state. That support means permissions for The GLP, as well as pedagogical and ludic accompaniment, marine transportation, infrastructure, tide forecasting and logistics. The project also counts with the support of the environmental secretariat of the city of Sanquianga, The National Guard, The environmental organization of national parks, students boards, Hotel Industry, Unionization of recyclers of the city, Parental associations, Communitarian councils and Communitarian boards.


Where will these actions be taken?

The Subregion of Sanquianga is one of the 13 subregions of the Colombian department of Nariño. It comprises the municipalities of El Charco, La Tola, Mosquera, Olaya Herrera and Santa Bárbara, that cover a total of 5,844 square kilometers.

The population comprises a total of 101,713 inhabitants, corresponding to 6.13% of the total of the department of Nariño; Of these 33,258 are located in the urban sector and 68,455 in the rural sector. In terms of gender, 52% are men and 48% are women.

The main economic activities are based on the fishing and agricultural sector, highlighting banana, coconut, cocoa, sugar cane and tropical fruits; Equally important is the exploitation of bovine, porcine, equine and other minor species. It is also worth mentioning the mining activity. Fishing activities are carried out artisanally in the marine area and mangrove area. This subregion comprises 20% of the whole mangrove of the coast of the Pacific colombia and with the population population it discards daily 13,5 tons daily, that is to say 418,5 tons of contaminants.

Impact/Benefits


What impact will these actions have on greenhouse gas emissions and/or adapting to climate change?

As mentioned above, the municipalities of Sanquianga Subregion are depositing 13.5 tons of garbage a day, which leads to a major problem in terms of waste disposal. These pollutants are being discarded by the community and are discharged into a body of water, it is also known that by the winds and tides thousands of litters of garbage arrive to the coastal sonas and have to come into contact with the different marine ecosystems the fish And turtles are choked with the plastic of the sea. 

 

Given the high percentage of PET used daily in the basket in families in the world for the permanent consumption of food where daily billions of tons of this product are discarded in the world to the ground and sea; and without proper management this material 100% recoverable is the most polluting for the sustainability of life on planet earth, it will continue to generate the impact already being felt on the ground and Pacific Ocean that can not be evaluated according to criteria economic. It is estimated that it may take between 500 and 1,000 years to degrade each of the virgin material, depending on the type of plastic.

With the environmental project GREEN LITTORAL will be benefitted the sea species that dwell in the Pacific Ocean, since ton thousands of plastic will no longer end up in the sea. The educators and students will be benefitted as well in the sense of contributing to the sustainability of the environment; the community to be hired will be benefitted too, since they will be able to count with an income for the improvement of their lives.

· The Planet: The greatest benefiter is the planet itself as the recycling labors allow reduce the toxic emissions from the wrongly managed wastes that harm the ozone layer and fosters gradually the global warming, ton thousands of waste will be kept from ending in landfills which shall decrease the impact made to earth by the landfill.

· Community: The community will count with GREEN SCHOOLS where the students of the city will be able to live and learn in harmony with the environment, moreover directly with citizens and tourists thanks to the tons of retrieved material, will be able to count with spaces, beaches, Parklands and a cleaner and a more uncontaminated environment. Work will be fostered as the project starts which also will allow decreasing the unemployment rate in the municipalites that is actually above of 67% of the total population of it, These people will be directly benefitted by being able to be employed, increase their incomes, educate themselves as well as learn of the great value of the retrieving labor.

· Educators and students: Through the Campaigns and training esta Important population of the city will be benefitted since Directly They will learn how to be more ecological Citizens, the will know about the great Importance of retrieving and by Means of incentives will be Awarded, awards and exalted Encourage them to continue With This Important work. (The subregion of Sanquianga  has 22,000 students).


· Marine ecosystem: Ton thousands of wastes will no longer reach the Pacific Ocean as well as the beaches which will allow that many sea species that dwell in the area are able to prolong and improve the quality of life, also count with a cleaner sea so they can reproduce in a healthy and uncontaminated environment.

- Retrieve every thrown away PET bottle by the educative community of the city.

- Fostering the students and the community in general, to recover beaches in all ecological aspects.


Costs/Challenges


What are the proposal’s projected costs?

For the implementation of this beautiful environmental project of sustainable development GREEN LITTORAL ¨Greener…More Littoral¨, is required an initial budget of US$ 10.000. The funding quote for this project was made projected to a six years term. For the implementation of it, the foundation Touching Hearts will make an input of 0,20 which is equivalent to a 20% of the total worth of the GL project, that means to a total of US$ 2.000. Financing required for the acquisition of tools, equipment, machinery and capacities to achieve the project objectives.


Timeline

With the confirmation of a great group of work, the entire dedication of time, plenty of will and years of labor experience with the communities of the Colombian pacific, our foundation Touching Hearts with the GLP has begun to implement it in the port-town of Buenaventura. This beautiful project aims to retrieve hundreds of thousands of tons of recoverable material in the city as well as has started to create conscience about the importance of retrieving thrown away materials for the benefit of the sustainability of our planet. 

This proposal will also contribute in 10 years to minimizing the impact and the environmental recovery that the pollutants make to the planet and the different ecosystems, we will also have to recover thousands of tons of waste and benefit the communities, planet, populations of the civil sopciedad and tourists. The project also counts with three fundamental pillars that have vast importance for the sustainable development of the city of Buenaventura. These two pillars are composed by the retrieving initiatives EMBELLECIENDO MI PACIFICO (Beautify My Pacific) and RECUPERANDO MI TIERRA (Recovering my Land).

In the Pilot test an environmental issue was identified, which is the disposition of the contaminating wastes thrown away by the educative institutions of the sanquianga municipalities. In the pilot 5 educative institutions of the city were taken into account, these counting with a higher numbers of students in average for a period of 8 months, to identify the advantages and disadvantages of the environmental project of sustainable development GREEN LITTORAL. Furthermore the institutions were endowed with ten ecological points for the classification of the generated wastes by the educative community, these including.

The Pilot test of the project shows that the responsible disposition of the wastes generates a positive impact in a socio-environmental level owing to the same wastes that are deposited in the trash cans, at the point of being classified, ease that since the source can be carried out the retrieving of the virgin material which is fundamental for the environmental sustainability of the planet and also is an initiative that counts with the support of the educational community for the current state of the planet.
