Waste management issues in developing countries have not been taken as priority and this makes them remaining cross cutting. This hampers the sanitation and in other words the development of these countries. Even if waste management practices require resources but also the outstanding negative effects effects are also costing in other instances. Waste when are well managed can not only improve the sanitation of the country but also can generate incomes by the process of recycling and reuse.

For this, waste are not to be seen as hazard but as raw material for sustainable development

Suggest you look at the recycling of electrical waste. With proper controls and oversight, this can be an easily managed , and profitable line  for plastic, metals and glass recycling streams. Regards.

Your idea is good enough and practicable. But, it would be much better if you can explain more about connection between waste management and local economy. In my country, Indonesia, citizens try to collect their waste and submit to the waste bank, so their 'waste to money' deposit can be improved day by day. It will stimulates more action by society to keep their environment clean and surely contribute to the national carbon emissions reduction.  Hope it helps.

All the best for your idea.

I like that you explicitly focus on building local capacity in your proposal. I think this will be key for initiating and maintaining such a project. Also the tax exemptions for recycled products and the competitions between neighboring schools and villages both seem like great ways to incentivize the program. I have seen recycling competitions work in the US between schools, and the excitement that can be built along the way is invaluable.

I do believe that a stronger media plan is needed for this project though. It will be tough to get so many actors on board with the vision of this effort. Perhaps some sort of engagement strategy of higher levels of government or popular public figures (ex. celebrities, etc.) is necessary in order to capture the imagination of all of those that you would like to see involved?

Thank you for your amazing proposal !! I am so happy to see somebody who has sustainability and environmental protection waste management and Zero GHG emission. Too often there is no regard for the long term damage to environment and society. Well done, best of luck and keep it up!!!

It is a really nice project for this 21st century, GHGs emission free is needed this era for several reasons, the example: The climate change devasting humanity and also environmental monitoring through those key gases CH4, CO2, N2O, CFCs etc.  So excited to see the project implementation in Rwanda.

First of all, congratulations for such a serious and truly impactive proposal. I strongly believe it can really help the Rwanda to shift in more environmentally friendly waste behavior. Perhaps, in future can be used as an example of good practice for other developing countries and perhaps even developed countries. My concern for your project is, how much able you will be to make it a reality: I hope the problems that you might face will not win you and to fight till the end.

Dear Pius, thanks for the proposal. Looking to the food shortages in Rwanda and a very quick growth of Kigali and second cities, we need a good sustainable way to manage the cities wastes. It'll save land to be cultivated and reduce disease to spread where waste are stored.  It's a matter of public health and best land use. Please, Receive my kind appreciation for the proposal.RegardsJPHakiza
