This is already a successful program, and the leaders want to scale it up. The How2Recycle program already boasts over 75 corporate members, cumulatively representing over 500 brands. Companies include Target, Nestle, Coca Cola, General Mills, Hasbro, the Kellogg Company, Walmart (!), Unilever, Clorox, Kimberly-Clark, PepsiCo, SC Johnson, Walgreens, and Church & Dwight are “members” of this program, part of the 501c3 nonprofit GreenBlue. Amazing client list! I’d be curious to know what are the financial agreements with each of these companies. Is How2Recycle part of a long-term contract? Or is How2Recycle a pilot, or what? With so much corporate involvement and support, via the SPC (https://sustainablepackaging.org/type/executive-committee/), why don't the corporations bear the costs of the program expansion via a smart business model that gives How2Recycle some cash to scale the program? I like the idea of concentrating on Charlottesville to create a How2Recycle hub. The creation of impact tracking is key. Why not also create an employee engagement program to support How2Recycle at member companies. Using a platform like WeSpire (SFR full disclosure), you could take workers behind the label to increase awareness and participation in the corporate sustainability strategy.

How2Recycle labeling has the potential to increase awareness about recycling options among consumer, as well as put pressure on companies to improve packaging as the impact is more visible at the point of purchase. Including a compostable symbol for the label would be useful as well. The biggest barrier is partnering with businesses to encourage implementation.

Impressive and appealing elements include clarity and simplicity of the concept, capacity to shift behavior and norms and to create a virtuous cycle of improvement, coalition building, confidence in the public. I realize the project is developing and evolving all the time, but I wish a new element or aspect of the campaign were being proposed more specifically.

We are so excited to be a Semi-Finalist! Thank you for your thoughtful feedback.

Based on your comments, we added 4 new projects that we could consider undertaking if we received an award in this contest. First, we would get more companies to join with a special recruitment campaign; second, get current members energized about increasing their use of the label with a special engagement campaign; third, create a campaign to recognize the most valuable materials for recyclers and build consumer awareness about packaging design for recyclability; and fourth, subsidize How2Recycle for all businesses with packaged goods in Charlottesville, Virginia (our hometown).

We also added information on our existing How2Compost label, that tells people how to compost their BPI-certified packaging. How2Recycle and How2Compost work in harmony to provide a comprehensive recovery labeling system.
