Semi-Finalist Evaluation

Judges'' comments

The numbers in the beginning are unclear. Why do you need 2500 toilets to reach 1000 people? The potential positive impact is clear, but it is unclear if the toilet has already been developed and tested or if the funding request is to develop the toilet itself.

This is a well known technological fix and certainly has widespread potential benefits. More needs to be done, however, on directing political investment and creating a business case to incentivize users. Where this technology has been put in place before - such as India - the main obstacle to scaling has been the price of the unit and the costs of maintenance. This proposal would benefit from more details on how it will move past these obstacles.

The proposal does not highlight the benefits to the environment of this intervention. This is crucial as nature-based solutions benefit both nature and society. Additionally, the proposal does not show how mobile toilets increase communities’ resilience to climate change? How are the returns of the project calculated (for every $1 spent there will be a $7 return)? How will the hyacinth be used in the construction of the toilets? The proposal does not make clear the impact that this project will have on greenhouse gas emissions or how it will address climate change adaptation. Instead, there is generic information about the vulnerability of water resources and water infrastructure to climate change. Projected costs are also missing from the proposal. Besides the financing required, what are other potential barriers to the success of this project?
