This is an important initiative, but not unheard of in terms of innovation. The proposal would be further strengthened from examining what has worked well and what obstacles exist for other similar initiatives like the The Trillion Tree Campaign that also produce chocolate.
The proposal provides a general overview of the approach but the results chain is not very clear. How will these tree species benefit the local community, and cause them to move away from cacao trees and embrace agroforestry? Is the ancestral knowledge being applied in this community one that was historically practised within the region? What specific actions, besides providing free trees will lead to this outcome? What are the native species of trees that will be distributed to farmers and what kind of benefits will they provide to farmers (and how do these benefits compare to current practice)? All of these are implied but not explicitly stated. The project proposes to give free trees to community members, have there been community consultations so far to discuss their needs and do these specific tree species address these? Further, the project proposes mobile technology but this is not explained – will farmers use existing technology? Will the project create a new app? Do farmers possess mobile phones that will allow them to use the technology or will the project also provide this? It is commendable that the project team is working within its own community and seeking to upscale an intervention that they have already tested; however, there’s some more work to be done in order to achieve feasibility.
