Pitch

Proposed is a method to lower sea temperature rise in LDC coastal communities and generate clean, renewable energy output at the same time.

Description

Summary

What is proposed is method of drawing cold water from deep sea sources to LDC coastal communities by mean of device that would generate clean electricity for the communities as well. The present state of the art for generating electricity from moving water in coastal communities includes wave energy devices as well as underwater water turbines.

The proposed device would draw cold water to the region of surface waters by means of the following:

-A Tube Structure that allows surface area currents to flow through.

-A pipe that allows cold water from the ocean depths to flow into the tube.

The flow of water from sea depths is powered by the lift mechanism of dense, cold water entering a tube of lower density, warm density. The cold water tube exits in the direction of the flowing water current, allowing it to pulled from the ocean depths. A water turbine sits at the exit of the tube, generating clean energy with increased density of the combined waters.

The proposed device is relatively inexpensive to build, making it economically viable for LDC coastal communities. The coral in these types of regions would have lower temperature water, benefiting coral as well as the saline dependent on healthy corals. Lower regional sea temperatures inhibit hurricanes and tsunamis, as well as promote aquaculture for the LDC coastal communities

Is this proposal for a practice or a project?

Practice

What actions do you propose?

The flow of water from sea depths is powered by the lift mechanism of dense, cold water entering a tube of lower density, warm density. The cold water tube exits in the direction of the flowing water current, allowing it to pulled from the ocean depths. A water turbine sits at the exit of the tube, generating clean energy with increased density of the combined waters.

Who will take these actions?

Any organization could participate in the construction of this project because it will likely be constructed in international waters.

Where will these actions be taken?

The proposed project would be for any and all LDC coastal communities throughout the world.

In addition, specify the country or countries where these actions will be taken.

Impact/Benefits

What impact will these actions have on greenhouse gas emissions and/or adapting to climate change?

The main effect will be to lower regional sea temperatures. The secondary effect would be to generate clean energy. The exact calculation on greenhouse gas effect has not been determined yet.

What are other key benefits?

The Key Benefits for LDC Coastal Communities:

-Lowering Regional Sea Temperatures

-Protecting corals from rising sea temperatures

-Promoting aquaculture

-Inhibiting hurricane and tsunami development from warm sea waters

-Generating clean, renewable energy

Costs/Challenges

What are the proposal’s projected costs?

Some marine life may be injured by the sea turbines inside the tubes, but the tubes are safer for marine life than are standard underwater sea turbines. Some deep sea creature may get pulled into the tubes pulling cold water from the ocean depths, but this is unlikely.
