Pitch

Smart combinations of organic and conventional methods could contribute toward sustainable productivity increases in global agriculture.

Description

Summary

Many see organic agriculture as the most sustainable form of farming and as the paradigm for global food preparation in the future.Hence,the question of whether organic agriculture alone could actually feed the world with its 7.5billion people today,and likely over 10bilion  people by 2050,arises time and again (Badgley et al.2007)

Is this proposal for a practice or a project?

Project

What actions do you propose?

a)To increase food production quantities through organic agriculture and conventional methods.

Organic farming is more knowledge intensive than conventional farming ;therefore,there is little reason to assume that organic yields obtained on experimental stations or on 1% of the agricultural area could be extrapolated to all agricultural land worldwide.Larger yield gaps are especially likely when it comes to upscaling organic agriculture in the developing-country small farm sector,where levels of formal education are often low,and access to agricultural training is limited.Average yield gaps of 30-40%would already mean that 43-67% of additional land would be required to produce the same quantity of  food with organic practices,implying a significant loss of natural habitats.

b)To promote sustanable consumption to ensure food security Tanzania.

When calculating the food quantities that have to be produced to feed the world population,current patterns and trends of food consumption  are typically assumed.However,a significant share of the food produced is lost or wasted  along the value chain,including food thrown away by the end-consumer (FAO 2011).

c)To reduce food prices for food security for many poor people in Tanzania by providing agricultural inputs.

Mainly owing to lower average yields,organic production is associated with higher cost per unit of output and thus higher prices.Currently,the higher prices only apply to the small certified organic market segment,but total conversion to organic agriculture would mean significantly higher food prices in the entire market.

Many poor households spend over 50%of their income on food.In such situations,food price increases are associated with higher levels of food in security and undernutritions,especially in urban areas (Ecker&Qaim 2011)

Who will take these actions?

This project will embark on participatory implementation,monitoring and evaluation.The primary beneficiaries of the project will participate fully in implementation of the project activities as well as monitoring and evaluation them.In addition this project will involve extension officers available at ward level.In this context,agriculture and community development officers will also participate.Detailed list of activities,cost 10 expected difficulties and schedules that are required to achieve objectives of the project will be communicated to all beneficiaries (see section 4 of this proposal and attached log farmer)

Monitoring of the project implementation will be carefully done to ensure that the project is being implemented properly and that necessary adjustments are done process by being assigned specific tasks to carry out during the process.Stakeholders will amicably come-up with monitoring system agreed to all.In order to come -up with effective monitoring system,they will need to;

i.Clarify its purpose

ii.Establish monitoring criteria and indicators

iii.Decide what methods will be used

iv.Decide how feedback will be given and how the monitoring results will be used.

Local stakeholders will jointly evaluate the project impact annually;however conventional evaluation will be done twice;ater three years(midterm review)and at the end of six years (transition period).In doing participatory evaluation,stakeholders will carefully consider the following key steps;

i.Identify and decide on appropriate evaluation approach

ii.Identify who should and want to be involved

iii.Collaborate on creating an evaluation plan

iv.Gather information,analyze it and build consensus on results,collectively

v.Agree on finding and how will be used.

Where will these actions be taken?

This project will be implemented in Arusha Region at Meru District.Basically implementation of the project will be will benefit the entire population residing in four wards namely Nkoarisambu ,Nkoanrua,Seela Sing'isi and Nkoaranga.However ,specifically from its design ,the project will specifically benefit four villagers from Nfulony ,Nkoavele,Sing'isi and Ngyani.According to data obtained from village officers,these villages are estimated to have 14,538 populations,where 7,162 males and 7,376 Females living in 3,161households (table1)The project will cover an area of 18.91sq km.

Impact/Benefits

What impact will these actions have on greenhouse gas emissions and/or adapting to climate change?

Energy Use and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Approximately 25%of the anthropogenic  greenhouse gas (GHG)emissions are attributable to food production (Edenhofer et al .2014)Carbon dioxide (CO2)methane (CH4),and nitrous oxide (N20)emissiones accrue during the combustion of fossil fuels .

For the production of mineral fertilizer and the use of agricultural machinery .

The evidence suggests that organic  agriculture uses less energy per unit of Land ,and to a lesser extent ,also per unit of output than conventional agriculture.

What are other key benefits?

Country Policy Sustainability

Development Vision 2025 has identified that kind of enabling environment  that is essential for nation to flourish economically ,socially ,politically and culturally .It has taken into account expected changes and trends in the world of tomorrow .The implementation of the vision will have to include developing Tanzania's position those changes,and the need to deal with them through hard work,initiative ,skills,as well as to make use of the many opportunities that will appear and the resources available in our country .

The economy will have been transformed from a low productivity agricultural economy to a semi-industrialized one led by modernized and highly productive agricultural activities which are effectively integrated and buttressed by supportive industrial and service activities in the rural and urban areas .A solid foundation for a competitive and dynamic economy with high productivity will have been laid.Consistent with this vision ,Tanzania of 2025 should be a nation imbued with five main attributes;

i.Highly quality livelihood .

ii.Peace,stability and unity.

iii.Good governance.

iv.A well educated and learning society;and

v.A competitive economy capable of producing sustainable growth and shared benefits.7

The focus of this project is to help the country to achieve Highly quality livelihood for its citizens.

A high quality livelihood for all Tanzania expected to be attained through strategies which ensure the realisation of the following goals;

a)Food self-sufficiency and food security .

b)Universal primary educator ,the eradication of illiteracy and the attainment of a level of tertiary education and training that is commensurate with a critical mass of high quality human resources required to effectively respond and master the master development challenges at all levels.

c)Gender equality and the empowerment of women in all socio-economic and political relations and cultures.

d)Access to quality primary health care for all.

e)Access to quality reproductive health services for all individuals of appropriate ages.

f)Reduction in infant and maternal mortality rates by three-quarters of current levels.

g)Universal access to safe water.

h)Life expectancy comparable to the level attained by middle income countries.

i)Absence of abject poverty .

This project is developed to offer the great solution towards creating this word good place for every human being to live without threatening other creatures of the world in which their presence is very important .

Costs/Challenges

What are the proposal’s projected costs?

Budget Description

For six years our entire budget will cost about 180,000USD for Purchasing agricultural inputs,Training farmers,transport costs,food during training ,slaries,wages and other project implementation requirement .Below are simple description of the in tire budget.

AGRICULTURAL OFFICER;

We expect to have two agriculturalist who will give them allowance of 6,000/-USD where each of agriculturalist will be given 3,000/-USD for six years and their task will be training the farmers and advising them for the better achievement.

DISTRICT ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICE;

District Environmental Officer will be concerned with training on the issues related to income generation and gender issues where he/she will be given 3000/-USD as project full -time allowance.

PROJECT COORDINATORS

Project coordinators they responsible to invigilate and conduct all implementation requirements.They will be two where amount suggested is 300/-USD for both of them for each month of the project implementation.

Project coordinators will work effectively with Director and Operation manager of the organization who will be given 300/-USD for both them for each month of implementation so as to ensure the project succession .

ADMINISTRATION

As management time plan to spend 80,000/-USD to run the project where this amount will be used for buying avocado tree,training marketing and other project important implementation requirement.

Timeline

Project Output.

a)Tour reduce production costs for the food security in Tanzania

In the small farm sector,Certification fees and related administrative costs are typically covered by farmer cooperatives,exporters ,or development organization .However,meeting certification requirements is often associated with certain investment cost.(e.g.,new equipment) that farmers have to bear individually (kleemann et al.2014).Also organic certification involves a three-year transition period,which can be understood as a sunk cost.During this transition period ,farmers cannot yet benefit from an organic price premium,but yields are often particularly low due to learning and experimentation with the new production methods(Caldwel et al.2014)

b)To recovery maintain soil quality for sustainable use.

Millions of hectares of previously fertile land have become unsuitable agricultural production because of soil degradation.
