Member Profile
Dr Geoffrey J. Hay is an Associate Professor in Geography at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Geoff has over 25 years experience in GIScience (Geographic Information Science), is the author of more than 240 scholarly works, and leads an active research program in Geographic-Object Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA). GEOBIA integrates automated feature detection from satellite and airborne images with GeoWeb technologies, geo-data mining, and sensor networks to map, monitor and model the changing environment.
His recent research focuses on high-resolution airborne thermal infrared imaging to support Low Carbon Communities, Green Roof monitoring and Urban Energy Efficiency, which he leads through the HEAT (Heat Energy Assessment Technologies) project (www.saveheat.co). HEAT is a FREE GeoWeb service designed to help residents (i) improve their home energy efficiency, (ii) save their money, and (iii) reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by finding their HEAT Score, Hot Spots and visualizing the amount and location of waste heat leaving their homes and communities, as easily as clicking on their house in Google Maps.
In November 2013, Dr Hay’s research team received the MIT Climate CoLab Grand Prize for the HEAT Geoweb project, winning from over 400 crowd sourced contestants world-wide, and appearing in 20+ national/international media interviews - including 2 invited presentations to Google. In April 2014, this research project was commercialized as MyHEAT.
