Kara manages National Wildlife Federation’s Climate-Smart Communities program, which helps communities identify and implement nature-based approaches to prepare for the impacts of climate change (also called eco-system based adaptation). She is currently working on a project in Long Island Sound to identify specific barriers to adopting green infrastructure for stormwater management and recently authored Green Works for Climate Resilience: A Community Guide to Climate Planning,  a primer on nature-based approaches geared toward municipal governments and local leaders. Kara is also on detail to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to support the North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive study and to help accelerate the use of natural infrastructure for coastal resilience. Prior to joining NWF, Kara was the Technical Innovation Manager at ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability where she led the development and management of ICLEI's greenhouse gas emissions protocols and was the project manager for their climate mitigation, adaptation, and sustainability consulting projects. Kara was appointed to Washington DC Council of Governments Climate, Energy, & Environmental Policy Committee and was selected by USEPA to participate in the US government review of Chapter 8 (Urban Areas) of the WG2 report of the IPCC’s 5th Assessment.  Kara has a Master in City Planning for Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B.A. from the College of the Holy Cross.
