Member Profile
Paul Goriup has more than 30 years experience working worldwide on biodiversity issues. From 1982-1986, Paul Goriup worked at the International Council for Bird Preservation (now BirdLife International) as Director of Conservation Programme. He managed over 300 projects around the world. Among others, he initiated major projects in partnership with voluntary and governmental organisations in Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Indonesia, Seychelles, Mauritius and many countries in the Mediterranean Basin. Many of these projects continue to the present day. The series of Important Bird Area inventories started under his supervision, which now form the basis for SPA designation in the EU Natura 2000 network.
In 1986, Paul Goriup established (and is currently Chairman of) the Nature Conservation Bureau Ltd, which has become one of the largest private biodiversity management consulting companies in Britain. In 1996, Paul Goriup became involved with private ethical investment in ecologically sustainable businesses, and founded one of Britain’s first positively ecological public shareholding companies, FIELDFARE International Ecological Development. This company raises private-sector capital for small-scale ecologically sustainable investments in eastern Europe such as biomass production and ecotourism.
Paul Goriup was elected a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management in 1999 and became a Chartered Environmentalist in 2005 and a Chartered Ecologist in 2014. He is an invited member of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (serving as Editor of the technical journal, PARKS, from 1991 to 2003) as well as the IUCN Species Survival Commission.
