My name is George Oselu, currently working with Kenya Tea Development Agency, as the Forest Officer.
KTDA is assists the small scale farmers in Kenya to produce, process and market her teas.so far the organization supports over 500,000 small scale farmer across the entire country. It has 67 factories and expansion of the factoires in on the increase as productivity of the green leaf increases.
I oversee the supply chain of wood and biomass across all the factories to ensure there is enough wood fuel to process the green leaf.Fire wood supply across the country is dwindling and hence we are exploring other alterantive thermal sources.Averagely KTDA uses over 900,000 cubic metres of wood fuel.80% of this wood fuel is supplied by the farmers within the catchment however competeing needs has pushed the factories to explore the buying of its own land to put up its own wood lots. The cost of land here in kenya is prohibitive as on average 1 acre of good land is about 6000 USD.
According to our own estimations we need close to over 40,000 acres of land to acheive 70% our internal wood needs. We are not yet half of this as things stand. We therefore require to expore other vible species such as bamboo and briequets. All this require resources.
