I want to join the Climate CoLab for 2017 to propose the contest for solid waste management in Rwanda. Waste sector contributes to GHG emissions in different ways. Methane is produced from anaerobic degradation of organic waste disposed of into the open dumpsite, from solid waste biological treatment and from domestic and industrial wastewater treatment and discharge under anaerobic conditions. There is also a fraction of Carbon dioxide which is produced from anaerobic decomposition of organic waste but this fraction is covered by the AFOLU Sector. Waste emissions include also N2O emissions from biological treatment of organic waste and wastewater treatment under anaerobic conditions.  The variations in contribution to waste sector emissions is shaped mainly by the disposal rate and treatment modalities.

Since 2012 private sector has been involved in solid waste collection in Kigali. The involvement of private sector into waste management in Rwandan cities has increased waste ending into dumpsite. This has shifted the shares in contribution for waste sector where solid waste has been evidenced to be the main source of Methane in contrast to the situation before privatization where wastewater was the main contributor to both Methane and N2O emissions. CH4 emissions from waste sector have increased from 166.41Gg CO2e to 373.77 Gg CO2e for 2006 and 2015, respectively.  Likewise NO2 emissions have increased from 194.42 Gg CO2e to 261.48 Gg CO2e, respectively. Solid waste disposal is the main contributor to methane emissions from waste sector with the contribution of 50% to the total methane emissions from waste sector while wastewater is the main contributor to NO2 emissions with contribution of 20% to the total NO2 emissions from waste sector. Therefore, this contest aims to proposal a market-based business model to reduce waste ending into solid waste disposal sites as a sustainable way to reduce GHG emissions from waste by more than 70% in 2020.
