I earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Central Florida, and am now pursuing a PhD at the University of Florida. My research is about turning trash into energy very efficiently. Specifically, I'm working on the computational analysis of multi-phase reacting flows to support development of a high-temperature steam gasifier. Once widely deployed, this system has the potential to simultaneously tackle two important sustainability problems: waste management, and the production of carbon-neutral energy.
I believe that we stand today at a crossroads where the most catastrophic effects of global climate change can still be averted. I do my part by carpooling, biking to work, and buying carbon offsets. While these are important small steps, I want my work to have a more direct impact. I want to look back at my career and see that I have not just made a good living for myself and my family, but that I have advanced humanity. I believe that “to whom much is given, much is demanded.” I don’t know for sure whether we can solve the technical and political challenges of climate change. But half a century from now, when one of my grandchildren asks me “what did you do about it?” I want to be able to look at her in the eye and say “I did absolutely everything I could.”
