Dr. Franz W. Gatzweiler studied Agricultural Economics at the University of Bonn, Germany and  International Agricultural Development at Humboldt University of Berlin. His doctorate research was on "The Nature of Economic Value and the Value of Nature". He received stipends and research grants from the German Research Foundation, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Volkswagen Foundation, the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, the European Commission, the German Käthe Hamburger Kolleg and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He was research fellow at the Ostrom Workshop in political Theory and Policy Analysis, Bloomington, Indiana University and received his habilitation (fakultas docendi) for independent teaching and research for the subject field of resource economics from Humboldt University of Berlin in 2015.

Currenty he is executive director of the global interdisciplinary science programme on Urban Health and Wellbeing: a Systems Approach, a science programme of the International Council for Science, sponsored by the United Nations University and the Interacademy Partnership. Some of his interests focus on collective intelligence and science communication.
