La Propuesta:
Tono
Carao (Cassia grandis Anemia suplemento sanador sangre)

Add to references & incorporate in final proposal .. articles noted below lead me to believe that the cost of making biochar in Central America would greatly reduce total costs of biochar use for "carbon farms" and related projects such as this reforestation proposal.
Biochar:
Energy Independence Soil Carbon Biochar costs, calculations & logistics http://www.americanenergyindependence.com/soilcarbon.aspx
(snip) Five hundred pounds of biochar can be included (mixed) in one cubic yard of enhanced dirt; the percent of biochar in the mixture would then be about 15-20% by weight. A square yard area six feet deep will hold two cubic yards. An acre of land is 4,840 square yards; and if excavated six feet deep, an acre can hold 9,680 cubic yards of enhanced “dirt” sequestering 500 pounds of biochar per cubic yard.
4,840 square yards multiplied by 2 yards deep equals 9,680 cubic yards per acre; at 500 pounds of biochar per cubic yard, one acre six feet deep would hold 4,840,000 pounds of biochar. One U.S. ton (short ton) weighs 2,000 pounds. 4,840,000 divided by 2,000 equals 2,420 tons of biochar per acre.(snip)
-----
WA State University School of Economic Sciences The Economic Value of Biochar in Crop Production and Carbon Sequestration Feb 2010 http://www.faculty.ses.wsu.edu/WorkingPapers/sgalinato/WP_2010-03.pdf
(snip) This study assesses the potential value of the use of biochar as a soil amendment from potential dual benefits of increased crop yields and returns from carbon sequestration, under a set of assumed conditions. We consider the effect of biochar in improving crop productivity by ameliorating the soil acidity
. Next, we evaluate and aggregate emissions avoided and carbon sequestered when biochar replaces lime usage in the field. We then calculate the value of carbon offsets by using a low and high price range $1/MT CO2 and $31/MT CO2, assuming a carbon trading mechanism exists for biochar soil application. As a case study, we focus on wheat production in Washington State and examine farm profitability with and without the application of biochar. Our findings suggest that it may be profitable to apply biochar as a soil amendment under some conditions if the biochar market price is low enough and/or a carbon offset market exists.(snip)

Fledgling Biochar Company Makes it Better, Faster, Cheaper to Build Healthy Soil http://www.carboncultures.com/fledgling-biochar-company-makes-it-better-faster-cheaper-to-build-healthy-soil/
(snip) “We found a way to make it better, faster, cheaper.” This is accomplished by using portable kilns that can be taken directly to the slash pile. The kiln looks like a tent when its laminate stainless steel mesh foil panels are set up around the woody biomass. The simplicity of the design masks its complexity though. “It looks simple, but it’s not,” says Tovey. It took many versions to develop the model currently in use.
The kilns come in sizes of 4, 6, and 7 feet and can accommodate woody debris that is 3-5” in diameter. Depending upon how large and wet the wood is, 1,000 lbs. of wood can be reduced to roughly 300 lbs. of biochar in 1.5-2 hours. Carbon Cultures’ production costs are about half of their competitors, according to Tovey, and they are nearing their goal of $1,000 a ton for large orders. To properly amend a large volume of soil, 2-4 tons per acre are needed. When compared against the fertilizer cost of $100-$180 per acre, the use of biochar is greeted with skepticism due to the large up-front costs. Tovey admits that farmers find it “hard to stomach that large amount [of cost], especially if their neighbors aren’t doing it.”(snip)

(snip) Effective Microorganisms http://joshkearns.blogspot.com/2006/12/effective-microorganisms.html
Today we had a lesson in how to create “Effective Microorganisms,” or “EM” for short. EM is kind of a miracle substance in the garden than functions as plant nutrition, pest control agent, soil builder, and all-around ecosystem enhancer. So what is it?
EM is an inoculum of microorganisms cultured using compost, sugar, and a bit of the local soil. Microbes are a crucial part of every ecosystem, even the ecosystem we call the human body. The idea with EM in the garden is that you cultivate a super-vigorous culture of microbes that can use the native soil mineralogy, build soil and provide nutrition to your crops. There are even types of EM you can drink that will promote a healthy ecosystem in your gut!(snip)

Overall, the assessment found that the eight Amazon countries lost some 2.3 million ha of forest between 2004 and 2012. By comparison, Brazil, which was excluded from the study, lost 11.1 million hectares during the period. But Brazil's deforestation rate is declining, falling from 2.7 million ha in 2004 to 465,600 ha in 2012. More than 60 percent of the Amazon rainforest lies within Brazil. (snip)

The new research suggests that in a direct response to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels , trees are using water efficiently in order to achieve the given amount of growth.
Earlier studies have long predicted that plants would start using water more efficiently in response to the rise in carbon dioxide levels.
The study was led by Trevor Keenan and Andrew Richardson of Harvard University. Dave Hollinger, a plant physiologist, U.S. Forest Service's Northern Research Station is the co author of the study. The study was done in collaboration with scientists from the USDA Forest Service, Ohio State University, Indiana University and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany.
The ratio of water loss to carbon gain is the key feature of ecosystem function that is fundamental to the global cycles of water, energy and carbon.(snip)

I am going to be absolutely critical of my own proposal.
In order to combat carbon emissions via significant CO2 reduction projects, such as reforestation, there probably needs to be a minimum of several million trees planted (if not several hundred million). I highly recommend planting lots and lots of trees with the most significant amount of carbon sequestration potential, such as the Genizaro (Fabaceae family) which has a record of at crown diameter measuring 15 meters 0f absorbing 28.5 tons of CO2 annually. Using the mycorrhiza and biochar amendments will greatly influence any reforestation project.
--- How to Measure Atmospheric CO2 in Gigatons & Cubic Kilometers September 15 2007 www.ecoworld.com/atmosphere/effects/how-to-measure-atmospheric-co2-ingigatons-cubic-kilometers.html
(snip) Clearly if total tropical rainforest restoration (impossible) were to be implemented, the permanent addition of fast growing trees permanently removing 475 gigatons of CO2 from the earths atmosphere (every 7.8 gigatons of carbon removed lowers CO2 concentrations by one PPM) would be a very good thing. But compared to CO2 impact, the hydrological and thermal impacts of adding or removing tropical rainforest is far more significant.
Each year, nearly 15,000 gigatons of H2O, that’s 15,000 cubic kilometers of water, is evaporated from what remains of our tropical rainforests. For perspective, consider there are only about 12,900 (ref. Nasa Earth Observatory) cubic kilometers of water in the entire atmosphere at any given time, and that each year only about 50,000 cubic kilometers of water rain onto the continents.
Where there is no longer tropical rainforest, and it is well over 50% gone, there is proportionally reduced evaporation, less rainfall, and complete loss of the reflective cloud cover that perennially forms over tropical rainforest. Add these even more significant hydrological and thermal effects of tropical deforestation to the 475 gigatons of atmospheric CO2 that will either be added or deleted based on whether or not we remove what’s left, or replace what’s gone.(snip)
and
(snip) TROPICAL DEFORESTATION AND THE GLOBAL CARBON BUDGET Annual Review of Energy and the Environment Vol. 21: 293-310 1996 www.annualreviews.org/doi/pdf/10.1146/annurev.energy.21.1.293 (snip)

The primary question is whether the problem of climate-driven carbon loss could outpace anthropogenic deforestation during the coming decades. If such a source would indeed occur, then similar fossil fuel emissions would lead to faster atmospheric CO2 increase than before, and the balance between mitigation and adaptation efforts for the global climate system would be significantly affected. (snip)
**** In conjunction with reforestation, we must stop, seriously, tropical forest deforestation. Now.

Nicaragua: restoring degraded soils 750 ha over 3 years, 400 trees per ha (low stocking rate) as focus is on soils restoration. 50% women involvees. List specific species to be used including native medicinal trees and high-value hardwoods. Use innovative Biochar strategies to store carbon and mycorrhizea to increase carbon in soils. Very specific, detailed proposal, with deep set of specific references.

by low stocking rate, do you mean this not a very large number of trees to plant? Or, the cost per tree is low?

PJ,
You might want to check into making the biochar in a manner which allows it to absorb nutrients (organic nitrogen, phosphorous, maybe others) from municipal or livestock wastewater. If you have some good data on that, please share and feel free to improve your proposal discussion. My day job is Ideas & Engineering at a municipal WWTP. We have been approached by potential biochar producers. I haven't penciled a project yet for lack of some hard data on how many tons of biochar absorb how many tons of nutrients.
Potential double duties here if the slower release of constituents of emerging concern (pharma, etc., if they also happen to absorb onto the biochar) from the biochar allows the plants and bacteria to degrade those constituents. I am also interested in hard data on this.

That is an interesting idea. I do see that there could be benefits, but also concerns with what is in the waste water. Concerns in Nicaragua would range from added costs to collect the wastewater (could increase the budget significantly) to knowing what is in the wastewater (from fertilizers and medicines from livestock activity) to other chemicals (not well controlled) in other wastewater, which would also add additional costs to the project since our organization is not in the chemical analysis businsess and a lab would need to be hired. I think, that since, as you point out, there would need to be some research data collected first before deciding if Nicaragua´s wastewater would be safe to add to areas where food and medicinal plants are grown. I have a feeling the trees would uptake non-organic materials if using Nicaraguan waters. (There is a primary practice, for example, of dumping wastewater directly into bodies of water, no treatment).
I don´t have access to my computer and am relying on an old and very slow computer at the office which eats up my internet fee quickly and the internet cafe´s computers (out of my pocket money) - so, until I get my computer part delivered and installed (not til Sept), I´m sort of helpless regarding additional research and I´m dedicating my time to finding more votes. But, I will keep this in mind if the project moves forward. Thank you for your good ideas!

I agree! With all of the tree mining (gross deforestation) the world definitely needs projects like this.
