Galen: Given the present culture of personal travel you have proposed a most revolutionary approach. Though the details seem nebulous to me good thing come out of the clouds! I would be happy to discuss this further.

The judges for the Transport Efficiency contest have selected this proposal as a *conditional* finalist. This means that they would like to see the following specific issues addressed before they will consider it for a Judges' Choice award: - There are a number of information solutions already at work in the real world; but combining them has great promise. How will this proposal create a powerful synthesis of existing and new approaches to result in significant improvement and emissions reduction? Some of their other comments on the proposal: - This is a very good seed of an idea in an emerging technology area, thus it has lots of potential. - Some of the components or elements mentioned have already been tested, in isolation, by other entities. This speaks to the feasibility of these components, within the overall proposal. - The particular novelty of this proposal would be in the integration of these concepts. - There are some relations to other proposals, including those titled "Open Car Pool" and "Sustainable Digital Dividend". - The presentation could be improved by addressing the proposal to the provided headings. The judges also want to emphasize that they will pay particular attention for the following elements when selecting a Judges' Choice winner from among the Transport Efficiency finalists: - An attempt, even if not exhaustive, at an analysis of the costs and benefits of the proposal. - References for assumptions, claims and numerical figures in the proposal or cost-benefit analysis. - Brevity and focus in the proposal statement; an economy of words.

Hi Galen, your approach to combine all means of transportation seems very reasonable to me. There might be some services you can build on with your app. They are also considering different means of transportation: http://www.goeuro.com/ and http://www.fromatob.com/. The latter one even considers one large long-distance carpool provider. I would also be interested to learn about the data feed your system needs. Open CarPool might be one data source for your app providing consolidated data from many car pools. Good luck! Clemens

Thank you all for your feedback and support!

This doable, but is at least a couple of development cycles away from implementation. It’s more futuristic than Open Car Pools and thus fascinating. Lots of groups/organizations are talking about this, but few are actually making a serious attempt to develop something concrete. It is challenging, and thus exciting, but there is also risk associated with it. Envision that it would take 3-4 years to be implemented. The market case is not yet fully developed.

Thank you all for feedback and suggestions. I would like to make one correction to my plan, in the area of cost. At the time of writing, I was paid as a 'half-time' PhD. student in Berlin. The costs I stated were based on net income of a half-time PhD. student, which of course is quite different from the other overhead, taxes, etc. that a lab director must pay per student. Realistically, the yearly cost is more than double the USD $2000 I mentioned, meaning that all other cost figures should also be multiplied by something in the range of 2 to 2.5. Unfamiliar as I am with the management side of academia, hopefully this oversight can be forgiven.

Hi tomcal, Thanks for your comment! The best way to share your ideas with our community is to submit a proposal in our 2014 Proposal Workspace at https://www.climatecolab.org/plans. Here, youâll be able to welcome people to support and share your proposal, as well as comment on it and help you to develop it further. When we release the 2014 round of Climate CoLab contests, you will be able to move your proposals from the workspace to any relevant contest. Thanks and best regards, Stephan Link MIT Climate CoLab

It is OK to use existing stuff in the beginning but goal should be the ultimate design and development of net zero vehicles and systems. The simple secret of net zero vehicles is that they are small and light enough to be easily powered by human power. It is also important that supporting infrastructure and systems be extremely agile; optimally installed, modified and removed on demand. Systems provide automation, high performance, safety, comfort, etc. Design and development should address full extensibility to bottom of the pyramid developing world and top of the pyramid developed world markets and peoples. Considerable focus should be on poor people first to help lift them out of poverty traps and accelerate poverty eradication.
