Member Profile
Scientist at CIAT’s Decision and Policy Analysis (DAPA) Research Area. Holds a PhD in Applied Biological Sciences (Agriculture) from Ghent University, Belgium. Currently the leader of the expert group of Big Data at CIAT’s DAPA area. As part of his research, papers published by Daniel have shown evidence on how yields on tropical crops respond to subtle variations in the environment and also demonstrate that some farmers obtain higher yields than the majority, even under environmental conditions that superficially appear quite similar. These results formed the basis for an important project in Colombia that more than 5000 have been enrolled. Likewise, the methodologies employed in the articles have been recently implemented in rice and are providing the country-wide association with information on how to optimize productivity through the identification of the most climatic limiting factors associated with yield variation. With this latter study in September 2014, Daniel was awarded by the United Nations in New York as one of the winners of the Big Data Climate Challenge global competition.
Daniel has also worked for Bioversity International and the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland (HEIG-VD), and has been a consultant for Agricultural Research for Development (Cirad).
