Member Profile
I am currently a professor and researcher at the Institute of Fisheries, Ecology and Oceanography of the Gulf of Mexico (EPOMEX in Spanish) at the University of Campeche, Mexico. I studied biology at the National University of Mexico (UNAM), and my masters and PhD degrees at the University of Delaware. I have been studying the coastal and marine environments for 30 years; the first seven focusing in the biology and ecology of coastal and marine habitats and demersal fisheries. And the following 23 years I have been devoted to the integrated coastal zone management and marine policy fields. I have also experience in marine ecology, specially regarding trophic webs research; and I have worked in environmental education with coastal communities developing capacities, designing and implementing education plans for coastal and marine biodiversity and ecosystems. For six years I worked as the Minister of the Environment for the Government State of Campeche, which was a wonderful opportunity to develop and enhance institutional capacity, environmental policies, legal environmental framework, and promote numerous programs and actions for forests; biodiversity; waste and water treatments; coastal and marine biodiversity and ecosystems; apiculture; pollution control; environmental education; and climate change. I also got involved as the national coordinator to design the 6th Mexico`s National Communication of climate change fot the UNFCCC fot the past 15 months; and spent a year in a postdoctoral position at the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change of the federal Mexican government designing research lines and projects for mitigation and adaptation to climate change effects. I have lectured a number of undergraduate and graduate studies for the University of Campeche as well as several other universities in Mexico. And I belong to the National System of Researchers (SNI) with a Level I since 2003. I have published several books and peer reviewed papers.
