Semi-Finalist Evaluation

Judges'' comments

Judge 1:

This impassioned and right-minded proposal highlights the real power of personal involvement in issues of the climate and environment. Often advocacy for the adoption of the very best policy that addresses both short term critical needs and long term goals is the product of a working democracy composed of a well-informed electorate. MIT Alumni surely fit that bill and this judge would be very happy to see the alumni unite in the way described by the proposal.

Judge 2:

I applaud the intent of this proposal but there are no specific details on how to move forward.
How do you mobilize the alumni of MIT, given that some deny climate change, some accept it, and many are blissfully ignorant? What themes would generate the consensus required to launch a concerted effort?
There are 100,000 MIT alums in the US, which is about 0.03% of the population. How can we maximize our impact on this issue? Scientists and engineers tend to expect rational discourse but this topic has become so politicized that it triggers the emotional centers in most people's brains. How do we move past this?
This proposal would be much more substantive if it addressed these questions.
